Principal Infrastructure Architect - Direct-Hire/FTE - Remote (Washington DC Metro)
The Infrastructure Architect is responsible for translating business and technical requirements into scalable, secure architecture designs that guide the development and implementation of enterprise solutions, ensuring alignment with established design patterns and principles defined by the enterprise architecture team. This role requires deep expertise in enterprise security, Identity and Access Management (IAM) design and implementation, configuration and build automation, and software architecture, combined with strong leadership skills. The architect provides technical leadership and mentorship across infrastructure, network, cloud, platform, and program domains, driving innovation and ensuring solutions are efficient, compliant, and aligned with company goals.

Title: Principal Infrastructure Architect
Location: Washington DC.
Compensation:$150,000-170,000 Annual Base Salary

The Infrastructure Architect is responsible for translating business and technical requirements into scalable, secure architecture designs that guide the development and implementation of enterprise solutions, ensuring alignment with established design patterns and principles defined by the enterprise architecture team. This role requires deep expertise in enterprise security, Identity and Access Management (IAM) design and implementation, configuration and build automation, and software architecture, combined with strong leadership skills. The architect provides technical leadership and mentorship across infrastructure, network, cloud, platform, and program domains, driving innovation and ensuring solutions are efficient, compliant, and aligned with company goals.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Accountable for infrastructure design of large and/or architecturally significant IT initiatives
- Accountable to lead project managers as well as the business team with project infrastructure requirements, costing, and work breakdown
- Accountable for architecture oversight and sign-off on the detailed designs produced for internal or external services
- Lead the design, implementation, and governance of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, with a focus on leveraging Microsoft Entra ID for centralized identity management, authentication, and access control
- Design, implement, and manage Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) policies using Microsoft Entra ID and other relevant platforms to ensure appropriate access permissions and security for all users and resources.
- Configure and manage Single Sign-On (SSO), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and Conditional Access policies using Microsoft Entra ID to enhance security and streamline user access
- Implement Privileged Identity Management (PIM) and Identity Protection features in Entra ID to manage administrative access and mitigate security risks
- Responsible for providing recommendations on continuous integration and delivery infrastructure
- Serve as an architectural or subject matter expert advisor to senior IT management, and mentor junior level technical staff within multiple functional areas of the IT organization
- Aligning efforts with central architecture function to influence technical standards and progress enterprise objectives
- Working with ICANN Platform owners, engineers, and other architects to guide / create technical Enterprise Architecture framework.
- Develop an architectural framework for networks, compute and storage for both on-premises and cloud / hybrid technologies to establish design, operations and support principles.
- Partner with business stakeholders to design next generation technology solutions, while continuing to support existing business capabilities on legacy systems
- Drive the automation of configuration management and build processes to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
- Accountable for the infrastructure design, configuration, documentation, and maintenance of any assigned systems
- Supervise the work of team members with respect to assigned infrastructure and projects to ensure best practice and on-time delivery
- Drive programs to effectively monitor and measure the productivity and efficiency of our workforce
- Responsible for development of any required automation software development and documentation
- Responsible for infrastructure lifecycle planning
- Provide final technical support escalation on any infrastructure related issues
- Proven ability to influence and gain trust at a peer group in business and technology levels in multi-culture environment
- Other duties as assigned or requested
- In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory), including identity lifecycle management, authentication, and access control
- Expert in Identity and Access Management (IAM) principles, frameworks, and technologies
- Understanding of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) design and implementation
- Familiarity with Single Sign-On (SSO), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, and Privileged Identity Management (PIM)
- Skilled in designing and implementing RBAC, SSO, MFA, and Conditional Access policies
- Application Virtualization and Containerization expertise required
- Continuous Integration and delivery expertise required
- Storage Area Network experience required
- Knowledge of the IPv4/IPv6 Network Addressing and Domain Naming System required
- Knowledge of systems administration best practices required
- Strong Windows and Active Directory infrastructure administration skills
- Advanced knowledge of relational databases
- Knowledge of object and network storage
- Understanding of Infrastructure Security Concepts and Strategies
- Strong knowledge of network platforms, firewalls, routing / switches, DNS/DHCP, and load balancer
- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the organization's technologies and architectures
- Identify and lead the resolution of highly complex technical problems
- Skilled in presentation, listening, interpreting, and providing unsolicited feedback as required
- Ability to present designs and ideas to Architectural Review Board (ARB)
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to work with highly diverse workforce
- Able to work independently (self-motivated)
- Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems
- 12 years of systems infrastructure design experience required
- Linux/Unix systems administration expertise required
- Experience with creating architectural standards document and governance practices
- Experience with Cloud computing (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and knowledge of related services
- Experience with Agile Methodologies and demonstrated ability to operate in this model
- Strong scripting skills in Perl, Shell, Python, or PowerShell required
- Experience with software development best practices required
