Job Details

The Advanced Optics R&D group at CFD Research is on a mission to revolutionize optical systems for commercial and Department of Defense (DoD) applications. We focus on advancing infrared imaging systems and sensors using innovative technologies based on nanostructured optical materials, such as metamaterials and metasurfaces. CFD Research seeks candidates interested in moving beyond conventional optical design and analysis to be part of a team dedicated to unlocking the future of optics. Together, we'll explore new frontiers and create optical technologies with real-world impacts.

Job Responsibilities/Opportunities:
u2022 Design, develop, and characterize advanced infrared imaging and sensing prototypes.
u2022 Assist with customer discovery efforts and lead the generation of new optical system concepts based on feedback
u2022 Work collaboratively as a member of a research and development team and manage projects with internal and external stakeholders
u2022 Present research findings, write technical reports, and contribute to proposals and scientific publications.
u2022 Learn and grow under the mentorship of top scientists and engineers in the optics and nanophotonics field.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (PhD, or MS with 2+ years of relevant experience) in Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • Experience with optical design tools such as ZEMAX, CODE V, and FRED.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages and data analysis tools such as MATLAB and Python.
  • Experience designing optical systems (especially ones with diffractive optical elements) and building measurement setups to characterize these systems.
  • Proficiency in optics including imaging, radiometry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.
  • Knowledge of computational electromagnetic methods such as FDTD and RCWA is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills.

Location: This role is based in the Huntsville, AL area, and is 100% onsite.
