AS/400 (iSeries) Mainframe Consultant Documentation & Reverse Engineering Specialist
Location: Remote (preferred), Hybrid optional NYC area
Type: Contract (1 2 years)
Start Date: ASAP (High Priority / Emergency Need)

Overview

Mako Client is urgently seeking a senior-level AS/400 Consultant to reverse engineer and document a legacy COBOL-based AS/400 mainframe environment. This system is over 30 years old with minimal existing documentation and deeply embedded business logic. The consultant will work closely with internal engineers to analyze, document, and stabilize the environment during a multi-year modernization initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze existing COBOL code and AS/400 programs for undocumented logic and data structures

  • Perform reverse engineering and create detailed technical documentation

  • Develop clear documentation to support future migration efforts

  • Collaborate with internal system engineers and business teams to validate findings

  • Support the stability and maintenance of the AS/400 system for the next 1 2 years

Required Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of AS/400 / iSeries experience in legacy environments

  • Strong COBOL development background (ability to read, analyze, and debug code)

  • Expertise in reverse engineering and technical documentation

  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance

  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills
