- Location: Extensive Travel Required (90%) U.S., Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico
- Work Hours: Standard 9:00 AM 5:00 PM, with occasional weekends
- Travel: Monday to Friday travel required. Must be comfortable with frequent travel. Ideal candidates are located near a major airport and have a valid passport.
Required Skills & Experience:
Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with:
OTDR testing (must be strong in OTDR; EXFO experience)
Fiber splicing and tracing
Fiber troubleshooting and loop testing
InSide Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) fiber systems
Familiarity with EXFO Toolbox or similar fiber test software
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
Data center fiber experience is a plus
Experience with industry-standard cabling and termination practices
Working knowledge of telecom infrastructure and vendor deliverables
Comfortable performing live OTDR demos or screen sharing during interviews
General Requirements:
High school diploma required; technical certifications a plus
Proficient with general office software
Prior project management or field coordination experience is an asset
Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain deadlines
Independent, self-reliant, and highly organized
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Additional languages are a plus
Note: Only candidates with hands-on OTDR and fiber optic testing experience will be considered. IT-focused backgrounds will not be accepted.
Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Fiber Test Engineer with strong OTDR and fiber optics expertise for a 1-year contract position (potential for extension). This role involves extensive travel across North America and requires both independent troubleshooting and collaborative testing of ISP and OSP fiber networks. Candidates must have hands-on fiber optics experience. IT background candidates will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform fiber characterization tests using:
OTDR (preferably EXFO OTDR)
CD/PMD analysis
Optical Insertion Loss (OIL) measurements
Power meter/laser source tools
Visual Fault Locators (VFL)
Conduct fiber optic troubleshooting and validation for ISP circuits
Execute fusion splicing and re-splicing using standard equipment
Ensure proper fiber handling, cleaning, and end-face scoping
Complete site surveys to validate infrastructure deliverables (e.g., fiber type, points of failure, diversity, support framework)
Prepare detailed test packages and test reports including redlining project documentation and fiber demarcation points
Maintain project schedules and field documentation (e.g., ticketing systems)
Interface with vendors/customers to resolve issues and coordinate remediation efforts
Present findings clearly to internal teams in written and oral formats
Work independently in the field while ensuring deadlines and technical accuracy
