Current efforts concentrated mostly on the visualization component of the Datawarehouse. The initial transition included creation of dashboards and reports from OBIEE visualization to Tableau. Here are the key milestones and status of this initiative:
Initial Rationalization: The transition roadmap began with an extensive rationalization effort, where the existing 18,500 OBIEE reports were assessed. This evaluation led to the determination that only 5,350 reports need to be migrated or re-developed in Tableau.
Collaboration and Development: The PDM Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Team, in partnership with the DOT Tableau (Data and Analytics Division) Team, successfully built Development and Production environments for PHMSA. This infrastructure has facilitated the ongoing development and deployment of reports and dashboards in Tableau.
Progress on Migration: Several reports and dashboards have already been migrated to Tableau, marking a successful start to the transition process. This indicates a commitment to improving data visualization and analysis capabilities for PHMSA stakeholders.
4.0 Scope
The Performance Work Statement (PWS) outlines the following key objectives for the contractor:
Rationalization: To execute this project efficiently, a final rationalization needs to be conducted using the results from last rationalization effort which will be provided to the contractor.
New Data Warehouse Solution: Investigate, propose, and implement a new Data Warehouse solutions that aligns with the Department of Transportation's Office of the Chief Information Officer (DOT OCIO) vision. The focus should be on leveraging cloud-based technologies, such as Databricks, to ensure scalability and high availability. A notional diagram is shown below in Figure 2.0.
Migration/Recreation of Reports and Dashboards: Successfully migrate and/or recreate existing reports and dashboards from the current OBIEE environment to Tableau, utilizing the specified data sources.
Data Governance Plans: Propose and implement Data Governance plans within the new solutions. This is crucial for maintaining data integrity, accuracy, and the overall reliability of the reports and dashboards.
High Availability Reports and Dashboards: Develop reports and dashboards that will be always accessible for PHMSA stakeholders, ensuring they can rely on these analytics for decision-making.
The contractor should approach these objectives with an emphasis on best practices, including thorough testing and validation processes to ensure that the transition is seamless and that stakeholders are adequately trained to use the new tools and technologies.
The contractor is expected to come up with innovative ideas for faster migration of reports and dashboards into the new Datawarehouse solution using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. Optimization of workflows leveraging AI will result in a more advanced technical stack, accelerating future deployments as well.
