IBM i Software Development Manager
Our client is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking IBM i Software Development Manager to lead their in-house development team. This position blends hands-on IBM i (RPG) development with team leadership, offering the opportunity to shape technical direction, drive modernization efforts, and oversee the full software development lifecycle for key enterprise applications.
You'll manage a talented team of developers, guide architecture and design standards, and ensure that business systems remain stable, scalable, and innovative.
Team Leadership & Delivery
- Manage and mentor a team of IBM iSeries, Java and Python developers, setting clear goals and providing coaching and performance feedback
- Plan, prioritize, and deliver development initiatives aligned with organizational objectives
- Promote a positive, collaborative work culture focused on learning, quality, and accountability
- Oversee code reviews, testing practices, and documentation to ensure technical excellence
- Report progress, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership on a monthly basis
Technical Execution
- Participate in software design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance
- Lead efforts to optimize, refactor, and modernize existing applications
- Develop and maintain solutions using modern IBM i technologies such as ILE RPG (Free Form), SQL, CL, and Db2
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues, ensuring high availability and reliability
- Collaborate closely with business and technical teams to translate requirements into scalable solutions
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in IBM i development using:
- ILE RPG / Free Form RPG
- IBM Db2, SQL, CL, and DDS
- 3+ years of experience managing or leading a technical team
- Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills
- Familiarity with project management tools and frameworks
- Proven success in juggling multiple projects and competing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
- Experience implementing Agile or hybrid project methodologies
- Background in modernizing legacy systems or integrating IBM i applications with newer platforms
