Rate:- $65/hr on C2C
Summary We are seeking a battle-tested, elite-level Mainframe Systems Engineer to architect, secure, and modernize one of the most mission-critical IBM z/OS mainframe environments in the industry. This is not a legacy maintenance role it's a technical leadership position responsible for transforming high-availability systems with next-gen automation, hybrid cloud integration, and ironclad security.
Responsibilities Own the lifecycle of all mainframe systems (IBM z15/z16), including system generation, patching, and configuration of z/OS, JES2/3, RACF, CICS, DB2, MQ, and associated utilities.
Design and implement zero-downtime upgrades, high-availability configurations, and disaster recovery drills that meet RTO/RPO
Architect and deliver Mainframe DevOps pipelines with secure integration into distributed systems using GitOps, UrbanCode Deploy, and Jenkins.
Deploy and maintain zCX (z/OS Container Extensions) for running containerized Linux applications natively on mainframe.
Lead RACF modernization, developing granular security policies, SMF analytics, and integration with enterprise SIEMs (e.g., Splunk, ELK).
Develop and enforce automation using Zowe CLI, Ansible for z/OS, and IBM Workload Scheduler (TWS).
Engineer mainframe integration with public cloud (AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud) through secure APIs, MQ bridges, or hybrid data lake architectures.
Mentor junior staff and act as SME across infrastructure, development, and compliance teams.
Required Experience:
10+ years in mainframe system engineering with hands-on IBM z/OS systems.
Deep expertise in core subsystems: CICS, DB2, IMS, VTAM, TCP/IP, SDSF, SMF, RMF, SMP/E.
Proven ability to manage multi-tenant or shared mainframe environments with >99.999% uptime.
Experience with real-world system dump analysis, memory leak tracing, and IPL recovery under SLA pressure.
Strong programming in Rexx, CLIST, JCL, and assembler-level debugging when necessary.
