Hello Professionals,

Job Description: Senior Functional Lead, Workday HCM & Payroll

Position: Senior Functional Lead, Workday HCM & Payroll
Client: Public Higher Education Institution (via Workday Professional Services)
Engagement: Long-term Contract (~30-35 hrs/week), Immediate Start through July 2026
Location: Remote

Company Overview:
ERPA is a leading provider of technology consulting services, subcontracted by Workday Professional Services to support a critical Workday HCM, Payroll, and Financials implementation for a public university in Florida. The client is transitioning from PeopleSoft and requires expert functional guidance to overcome resource constraints and get their stalled project back on track for a July 2026 go-live.

Role Summary:
We are seeking a deeply knowledgeable Functional Lead with end-to-end expertise in both HCM and Payroll to serve as the primary client-side subject matter expert. This individual will be the key functional bridge between the Workday implementation team and the university's business needs, ensuring alignment, configuring processes, and mitigating risks across the Hire-to-Retire-to-Pay spectrum. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver who can navigate the complexities of payroll while understanding the upstream HCM impacts, all within the context of public sector higher education.

Key Responsibilities:

This role is centered on providing integrated functional leadership across HCM and Payroll workstreams:

  1. Integrated HCM & Payroll Functional Leadership:
  • Serve as the primary client-side authority on the interdependencies between HCM and Payroll processes.
  • Provide expert guidance on core HCM areas (e.g., Staffing Models, Compensation, Benefits, Time Tracking, and Absence) and their critical integration points with Payroll.
  • Lead functional design sessions with the client's business users to clarify requirements and align on solutions that meet both HCM and Payroll objectives.
  • Configure, prototype, and troubleshoot functional setups in collaboration with the Workday team, focusing on areas requiring rework due to recent leadership changes.
  1. Client-Side Validation & Testing Support:
  • Act as the key functional resource for the Test Execution Lead, providing deep expertise to validate test scenarios, especially for integration points between HCM and Payroll.
  • Analyze and triage functional defects, determining if they are configuration issues, data issues, or require a change in business process.
  • Ensure that all functional configurations meet the client's business needs and compliance requirements for a public institution.
  1. Business Process Alignment & Knowledge Transfer:
  • Translate the client's existing PeopleSoft HCM/Payroll processes into efficient Workday best practices.
  • Work closely with the client's business users to resolve functional gaps and ensure a clear understanding of the new system's capabilities.
  • Document functional decisions and provide knowledge transfer to the client's team to build internal capability.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • 7+ years of functional experience leading HCM and Payroll modules for a large-scale ERP implementation (Workday, PeopleSoft, Oracle, or SAP).
  • Must have direct, hands-on experience with the end-to-end payroll lifecycle and its direct integration with HCM, including Time Tracking, Absence, and Benefits.
  • Deep understanding of core HCM concepts including organizational structures, job models, compensation, and employee lifecycles.
  • Proven ability to configure systems, troubleshoot complex functional issues, and guide business process design.
  • Experience in Higher Education or State & Local Government is highly preferred, with an understanding of the unique pay structures, funding sources, and reporting requirements.
  • Workday HCM and/or Payroll certification or proven implementation experience is a significant advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to explain complex functional concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Anthony. G
