Senior Underwriting and Commercial Clearance Counsel National
Job Summary:Provide senior-level underwriting and legal clearance support for complex national commercial real estate transactions. This role is responsible for reviewing and approving high-risk title matters, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance throughout the transaction lifecycle, and serving as a key underwriting resource to production and closing teams. The position plays a critical role in mitigating risk and enabling the successful closing of multi-state, multi-property commercial transactions.
Key Responsibilities
Provide title insurance underwriting support for national commercial real estate transactions
Review deeds, mortgages, court orders, regulations, and other legal instruments for legal sufficiency
Approve transactions that exceed single risk liability limits
Provide guidance on complex underwriting issues and coordinate with closing teams as needed
Ensure pre-closing, closing, and post-closing activities are completed accurately and in compliance with applicable laws
Maintain complete electronic underwriting documentation, approvals, and decision rationale
Assist with claims support and regulatory compliance matters
Participate in continuing education and support internal training initiatives
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Active and current membership in at least one U.S. State Bar
Minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience in title insurance; 10+ years preferred
Extensive experience with multi-state, multi-property commercial title transactions
Strong background in commercial real estate and title insurance underwriting
Special Requirements
Active attorney license in good standing
Ability to handle confidential and time-sensitive information
Willingness to participate in required continuing education programs
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
In-depth knowledge of title insurance products, policies, and endorsements
Strong understanding of commercial real estate law and insurance coverage
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents
Ability to apply legal principles to complex and varied underwriting scenarios
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to explain underwriting decisions and provide guidance to production staff
High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related database systems
Willingness and ability to learn new software and underwriting platforms
Additional Desired Characteristics
Experience with residential title insurance
Familiarity with regional or high-volume metropolitan title insurance practices
Prior involvement in claims support or regulatory compliance initiatives
Work Environment
Primarily office-based in a regional corporate office setting
Limited hybrid work eligibility at management discretion following onboarding
Standard business hours with flexibility to work outside normal hours as needed
Occasional participation in after-hours company events
