Work Arrangement: Remote (U.S.-based), although candidates to Buffalo, NY, are preferred.
Location: Offsite Remote (United States)
Duration: 6-month contract (40 hours/week; 1,040 total hours) extensions possible
Overview:
The Database Engineer will join the Database Platform Engineering group, supporting SQL database environments and production operations. The team manages both database platform design/automation and day-to-day operational support. This role falls on the operational support side maintaining SQL environments, resolving tickets, and participating in on-call rotations.
This position is not an application development role. While the team may leverage scripting or automation skills where appropriate, the focus is SQL database engineering, troubleshooting, and production support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide SQL database support across production environments, including ticket queues, access requests, and ServiceNow support tasks.
- Troubleshoot SQL platform issues across Windows server environments, ensuring stability and operational continuity.
- Close an expected minimum of three tickets per day once fully onboarded.
- Participate in on-call rotation (Thursday 8 a.m. following Thursday 8 a.m.), covering nights and weekends under a primary/secondary structure.
- Escalate issues when required engineers are not expected to troubleshoot beyond expertise during on-call.
- Collaborate with platform automation engineers and internal application teams to support database stability and performance.
- Maintain documentation and adhere to internal controls, regulatory standards, and operational processes.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree + 6 years RDBMS experience, or a combined 8+ years higher education/work experience with at least 6 years RDBMS experience.
- Strong SQL database support experience.
- Proficiency with Windows operating environments, troubleshooting, and production operations.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills.
- Ability and willingness to participate in on-call rotation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ServiceNow support experience.
- Experience with Ansible, Python, and/or multiple database technologies (not required).
- Prior experience supporting large RDBMS conversions, enhancements, and production issue resolution.
- 3+ years experience working with Bank applications or enterprise RDBMS support.
Schedule & On-Call Expectations:
- Standard business hours: Monday Friday, 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m., daily stand-up at 8:30 a.m.
- On-call does not authorize overtime; time flexing within the same week is used when overnight work occurs.
Role Scope & Experience Target:
- Mid-level target: 3 5 years SQL database engineering experience preferred, but higher levels will be considered depending on salary expectations.
- The role is production-focused candidates looking for primarily coding/development are not a match.
Additional Information:
- Remote work is approved, but Buffalo-local candidates are prioritized; fully remote candidates are not required to travel.
- Extensions are likely; conversion within the bank is possible elsewhere but not expected for this specific role.
