Lead Substation Engineer Protection & Controls

Are you an experienced electrical engineer passionate about the future of grid protection and control systems? Join a nationally respected infrastructure engineering consultancy that is redefining the standards in power delivery design and modernization. This is a rare opportunity to step into a fully remote, high-ownership role where your technical leadership directly supports the resiliency of energy systems across the country.

This organization blends the agility of a specialized firm with the impact and scale of top-tier utilities work. You'll collaborate with industry veterans on challenging, large-scale utility projects, while mentoring emerging engineers and helping drive innovation in protection and control systems.

This Role Offers:

  • Full suite of health insurance options including medical, dental, vision, and telehealth access.
  • Retirement savings plan with company match.
  • Generous PTO and paid company holidays, including floating personal days.
  • Paid family leave benefits including maternity, paternity, and adoption support.
  • Life and disability insurance coverage.
  • Flexible work arrangements, including remote work and flexible hours.

Focus:

  • Serve as the technical lead on substation protection and control (P&C) design projects from concept through execution.
  • Deliver high-quality engineering packages, including: one-line and three-line diagrams, protection schematics, wiring drawings, relay panel layouts, conduit/cable sizing, and detailed bills of material.
  • Design and optimize auxiliary AC/DC power systems, SCADA interfaces, and communication architectures.
  • Conduct system calculations including relay burden, battery sizing, short circuit analysis, voltage drop, and load tabulation to ensure robust and reliable design performance.
  • Perform relay coordination studies and develop protection settings tailored to each application.
  • Oversee integration of control, protection, and monitoring systems across substations and transmission facilities.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with designers, drafters, project managers, and clients to meet project goals.
  • Lead quality reviews of peer design packages and ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Conduct on-site walkdowns and contribute to scoping and field engineering efforts.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and knowledge-sharing across project stages.

Skill Set:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • EIT required; PE license strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in high-voltage (15 500kV) substation protection and control design.
  • Proven expertise in relay logic, SCADA integration, and system protection.
  • Deep understanding of substation lifecycle from conceptual design to commissioning.
  • Strong communicator with a team-first mindset and a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Passion for mentoring and a knack for coaching less experienced engineers.
