Please note that this is a 12 month contract position.
This is a remote position, preferably located near airport, with 90% travel required.
Must Have:
Willingness and ability to travel as part of the role.
Proficient in using OTDR and EXFO OTDR equipment.
Data Center experience working on fiber optics, including splicing and troubleshooting.
3+ years of experience working with OTDR equipment.
Required Experience:
Knowledge:
Organizational competence.
Strong experience analyzing OTDR traces, Optical Insertion Loss (OIL) data, and CD/PMD data.
Strong experience with optical power meters and laser sources for validation and troubleshooting of ISP circuits.
Significant experience with proper fiber handling, cleaning, and scoping practices, and ability to demonstrate techniques to others.
Experienced with industry-standard cabling practices, including dressing and terminating fiber and copper cabling.
Able to describe the details and structure of ISP and OSP fiber networks.
Proficient in fusion splicing using industry-standard equipment.
Understanding of various fiber types.
Communication:
High-level analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Effectively present to internal team meetings, both written and verbally.
Identify issues and implement resolutions efficiently.
Assist in fiber issue resolution.
Multi-task effectively and maintain project deadlines.
Interface with vendors and customers to develop issue remediation protocols.
General Experience:
Minimum 3 years experience in a Telecom Network Infrastructure environment.
Able to use generic office software.
Familiarity with EXFO Toolbox or similar software for fiber test data analysis.
Experience understanding vendor contractual deliverables.
Able to understand and implement fiber cabling/port mapping documentation.
Minimum 2 years in project management or project support, directing field resources is an asset.
Additional languages are a definite asset.
Responsibilities:
Maintain project schedules and ensure timely delivery of assignments.
Perform fiber characterization tests using OTDR, CD/PMD, power meter/laser source, and fiber end-face testing equipment.
Troubleshoot Inside Plant (ISP) fiber systems and take corrective actions for issues found.
Use Visual Fault Finders (e.g., red-lighting fibers) for fault identification.
Perform splicing or re-splicing of problematic fiber strands using fusion splicers.
Clean and inspect fiber end faces using standard industry methods.
Provide field analysis on vendor fiber networks from test data.
Prepare and submit testing packages including:
Redlining project documentation (fiber path and demarcation points).
Generating test reports per vendor/customer requirements.
Managing project field documentation and ticketing applications.
Interfacing with vendors to resolve fiber path issues.
Conducting site surveys to validate vendor infrastructure deliverables (fiber type, points of failure, diversity requirements, framework, racks, grounding, etc.).
Job Summary:
The Engineer will be responsible for testing, fault finding, and performing corrective actions for end-to-end optical fiber connectivity using various testing apparatus (OTDR, CD/PMD, Optical Insertion Loss measurements, and fiber end-face validation). The role also includes performing basic site surveys to investigate and correct network issues.
