The Service Tech Database Specialist will play a critical role in managing, configuring, and ensuring the accuracy of engineering data used in service tools. This includes processing specifications, maintaining databases, and ensuring repeatable, error-free workflows. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, exceptional attention to detail, and expertise in MS Access and data management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database Management: Design, develop, and maintain databases (primarily MS Access) for service tool applications.
- Data Processing: Accurately enter and manage 900 1,200 equipment specifications (some 80 100 pages long) into the system.
- Engineering Controls: Implement repeatable processes to ensure data integrity and consistency.
- Tool Support: Maintain internal documentation, process tools, and customer-facing applications.
- Simulation & Testing: Work with calibration/simulation tools to collect real-world data and package it for training/service applications.
- Quality Assurance: Validate that machine representations in service tools match engineering specifications.
- Collaboration: Work with engineering teams to understand data sources and ensure alignment with service requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Non-Negotiable:
- Proficiency in MS Access (database design, queries, macros).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering specs (e.g., how a machine should appear in a service tool).
- Extreme attention to detail (e.g., processing 1,000+ specs with zero errors).
Required Education
Associate s degree in computer programming or a relevant field.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
Required Skills:
Advanced Microsoft Access (Query Designer, VBA).
Strong SQL (querying, optimization).
Basic OOP (C#, C++, VB.NET, Java, or Rust).
Excel (macros, formulas for automation).
Preferred Skills:
Python (scripting/automation).
Power BI (or other visualization tools).
Experience with Oracle databases.
Job Responsibilities
Modify/test databases (SQL, Access) for Caterpillar s service tools (e.g., Remote Troubleshoot).
Implement calibration data and service procedures for annual software releases (A/B/C cycles).
Resolve data errors with Application Engineers and document changes.
Automate workflows (Excel macros, scripts) to reduce technical debt.
Develop/maintain internal tools (e.g., OIP Information Services).
Work with cross-functional teams (Finance, Engineers) to align data solutions with business needs.
Clarify requirements with stakeholders for ambiguous requests.
Run validation checks on configuration changes.
Ensure compliance with engineering controls.
Soft Skills:
Written/verbal communication (documentation-heavy role).
Analytical problem-solving (root-cause analysis).
Independent time management.
