Job Details

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the Digital Services team as a part-time backend software engineer, contributing to the development of modern data and technology systems.

  • Build and enhance backend systems that support real-time signage, mobile applications, and data-processing pipelines.

  • Contribute to systems that transform raw data into actionable information for end users.

  • Apply product-focused engineering practices to ensure high-quality user experiences.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams across the technology stack.

  • Develop scalable backend functionality using software development best practices.

  • Work with tools and platforms commonly used in full-stack development, such as Firebase, Netlify, Sentry, and AWS (experience with any is a plus).

  • Work with RESTful API development, message queues, networking, and JVM-based languages.

  • Assist with or support GIS or location-based data projects (experience with ESRI is a plus).

  • Run small-to-medium-sized projects, including preparing technical documentation such as scopes of work, software requirements, and estimates.

  • Demonstrate independence, curiosity, and a bias toward action, identifying workable solutions while considering long-term system robustness.

  • This is a part-time 25 hrs/week


Job Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of modern software development principles and best practices.

  • Basic hands-on knowledge of platforms used in full-stack applications (e.g., Firebase, Netlify, Sentry, AWS).

  • Familiarity with JVM languages, REST APIs, message queues, and networking fundamentals.

  • Experience with GIS or geolocation-based data systems is strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience working on customer-facing applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to run technical projects, create project documentation, define requirements, and produce accurate estimates.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work independently when needed.

  • Ability to contribute meaningfully to user-facing product outcomes.


Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.

    • Equivalent experience may be considered with appropriate justification and approval.

  • 2 4 years of experience in software design principles, graphic design for web, and user interface design (per skill matrix).
