Position Title: Infrastructure Engineer

Position Purpose: As the Infrastructure Engineer, this Tier 2 position supports the college's server infrastructure and Microsoft 365 environment to ensure stable, secure, and reliable access to technology services for faculty, staff, and students. This includes performing day-to-day monitoring, maintenance, and basic administration of on-premises servers, virtual machines, and cloud-based Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Working under the guidance of Technology Services leadership, this role assists with server patching, backup monitoring, Active Directory and Azure AD account management, and service availability checks. The position also provides second-level support for technical issues escalated from the help desk, focusing on user access problems, file and print services, Microsoft 365 support requests, and troubleshooting routine server and system performance issues.
The Infrastructure Engineer supports system documentation efforts, helps implement security best practices under supervision, and participates in planned system updates and infrastructure projects. This position plays a key role in onboarding and offboarding processes, ensuring user access is provisioned accurately across on-prem and cloud systems. Basic scripting (e.g., PowerShell) may be used to streamline account and license management tasks.
As part of the Technology Services team, this role collaborates with network, support, and enterprise application staff to maintain a consistent and functional IT environment across all VCCS college locations. The position may coordinate with VCCS and third-party vendors as needed for support issues and service requests.
While this role does not supervise other staff, it contributes to team knowledge-sharing and may provide mentorship and informal training to help desk staff on common issues related to Microsoft 365 and server access. The Infrastructure Engineer is expected to continue developing technical skills and contribute to the college's mission by supporting dependable and responsive technology services.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide technical support for server and Microsoft 365 systems, resolves all escalated incidents related to user access, system performance, email services, and cloud applications.
- Perform installation, configuration, and maintenance of server infrastructure, including physical and virtual servers, network operating systems, and core services such as DNS, DHCP, VPN, and Active Directory.
- Administer Microsoft 365 and Azure platforms, including but not limited to Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Sentinel, Intune, and identity/access management using Entra.
- Monitor server and system performance, apply updates and security patches, and maintain documentation related to system configurations and maintenance procedures.
- Support the college's backup, disaster recovery, and incident response processes by managing scheduled testing, backup job monitoring, and recovery readiness tasks in partnership with Technology Services leadership and appropriate outside agencies.
- Provide support for virtualization, storage systems, and related infrastructure under the guidance of senior staff.
- Assist with network and endpoint security maintenance, including antivirus updates, Microsoft Defender policies, and basic firewall or intrusion detection monitoring, following VCCS and institutional guidelines.
- Support system integration efforts, ensuring effective communication and compatibility across platforms such as security systems, building automation, emergency alerting systems, and Microsoft-based infrastructure.
- Respond to support requests via phone, email, help desk ticketing system, or in-person assistance, ensuring timely and accurate resolution or escalation.
- Assist with the implementation and support of security systems used by Public Safety (e.g., ID card systems, electronic keys, security cameras and Facilities (e.g., Siemens environmental controls).
- Contribute to system reliability by helping monitor uptime, identify potential service issues, and support resolution in coordination with senior infrastructure staff and the VCCS.
- Participate in annual penetration testing efforts by providing technical input, assisting with remediation plans, and applying recommended updates or configurations.
- Work with vendors as directed to assist in maintaining services related to telecommunications, internet service, and cloud systems.
- Support and maintain technical tools and platforms used in the college's cybersecurity stack, such as Avanan, SteelCloud, or dmarcian, under the direction of senior team members.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with relevant IT standards and frameworks, including ARMICS, PCI, GLBA, and cybersecurity insurance requirements.
- Maintain and support user account security, access controls, and license management, including provisioning and deprovisioning in accordance with institutional policies.
- Participate in regular team meetings and planning sessions, sharing insights and learning opportunities to contribute to the growth and efficiency of the Technology Services team.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for college stakeholders when addressing infrastructure-related service requests and providing status updates or support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of networking technologies, including LAN, WAN, wireless access, and common configurations such as VLANs, VPNs, TCP/IP, QoS, and DNS.
- Hands-on experience with the installation, configuration, and support of server systems, including both physical and virtual environments.
- Practical experience with Microsoft technologies including Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Azure AD, and related cloud services.
- Familiarity with information security principles, internet security protocols, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues across various systems and platforms.
- Ability to manage service requests using an IT ticketing system, including tracking progress, documenting resolutions, and escalating as appropriate.
- Ability to assess service effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and recommend changes to better meet user needs.
- Demonstrated experience supporting multiple projects and priorities within established deadlines.
- Proficiency in the installation and termination of structured cabling such as CAT5e and CAT6, including adherence to wiring standards.
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision, making informed decisions based on experience and institutional guidelines.
- Ability to interpret and follow Federal, State and Local regulatory and compliance standards such as PCI, GLBA, ARMICS, NIST, ISO and cybersecurity insurance requirements.
- Willingness and ability to evaluate and adopt new technologies to enhance service delivery and infrastructure reliability.
- Strong documentation skills, with the ability to create and maintain technical guides, configuration records, and support documentation.

- Demonstrated experience supporting enterprise network hardware such as switches, routers, firewalls, access points, and other edge devices.
- Ability to work safely on ladders and lift equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. when needed in support of installations or maintenance.
- Familiarity with multiple operating systems, including Windows 11, macOS, Linux, and iOS.

- Associate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
