Overview
D497, Hull and External Structures - the department is responsible for supporting design and analysis of submarine hull and external structures. This includes interface with shipyard and trades to assure completed designs are producible. Responsibilities include structural engineering analysis of pressure hull shell and frames, bow and stern main ballast tanks, built-in tanks, hull and tank penetrations, external fairings, external foundations, bulkheads, and steering and driving control surfaces. Responsibilities also include interface control and integration of attached external submersible vehicles.
Engineers work in teams by area of the ship and/or by function to develop the design from established requirements. Engineering analyses include submergence, fatigue, hydrodynamic flow loads, tank pressurization loads, shock loading (static and dynamic) and others using state-of-the-art computer methods and convention hand calculations. Engineering reviews the design from concept formulation through detailed models to design disclosure in a Design-Build-Sustain environment, as well as supports construction during the build phase. Engineers will interface with a multi-function design team and participate in Navy design reviews.
Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home. This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables. Please ask for more details on how it applies to this opening during discussions with the department.
