Role: Cobol Developer/Senior Mainframe Modernization Engineer

Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid Onsite)

Duration: 12+ Months

Intervview Mode: Video

What You'll Do

  • Lead the modernization of legacy mainframe applications built on COBOL, JCL, VSAM, and DB2, enabling integration with distributed platforms such as Oracle databases and API-based systems.
  • Design and implement automation to eliminate high-risk, manual workflows, including client onboarding/offboarding, account merges, and data conversions.
  • Partner closely with globally distributed teams, including India-based engineering groups, to drive execution and delivery.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of deliverables-identify gaps, surface risks early, and proactively drive solutions to completion.
  • Deeply learn and apply business logic related to cash sweeps, account structures, and client activity, using that knowledge to inform technical decisions.
  • Improve batch processing, reporting, and conversion jobs through thoughtful optimization and automation.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Mainframe Expertise: Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2, and z/OS.
  • Distributed Systems Exposure: Experience working with Oracle databases, SQL, and data synchronization or migration strategies.
  • Tools & Utilities: Familiarity with CA-7, Control-M, REXX, FILEAID, AbendAid, SPUFI, QMF, and change management tools such as Changeman or Endeavor.
  • Automation & Optimization: Proven ability to streamline batch, reporting, and conversion processes to reduce operational risk.
  • Process Knowledge: Experience supporting conversions, client onboarding, policy administration, or reporting workflows.
  • Communication & Ownership: Assertive, clear communicator with the ability to collaborate across geographies and take full accountability for outcomes.

Nice to Have

  • Background in brokerage, mutual funds, insurance, or adjacent financial services environments.
  • Experience with API development, MQ Series, or modern integration patterns.
  • Knowledge of ad hoc reporting, SQL performance tuning, and batch job optimization.

Who You Are

  • A modernization-focused engineer who thrives on transformation-not routine maintenance.
  • Curious, creative, and open to rethinking how legacy systems can better serve the business.
  • Comfortable leading initiatives, mentoring teammates, and influencing without authority.
  • Confident owning difficult conversations and aligning technical solutions with business goals.
