Principal Engineer
Job Summary

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP is seeking a senior-level electrical engineer to work as a Principal Engineer in the Power Delivery Substation Specialty Services Department in our Substation Business Unit (SBU). This individual is expected to independently develop and apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts, and approaches to unique engineering problems. This principal technical advisor role will lead in assimilating and disseminating complex engineering concepts in the power delivery power transformer subject matter area to internal/external business unit stakeholders. It is desirable that the individual also has experience in substation and generation subject matters. The Principal Engineer will serve as a technical specialist and have the knowledge and skill set to provide consultation and guidance to project teams and clients in multiple practice areas and markets, concentrating on the power transformer market. This position reports to the POWER office closest to the employee's residence, with the flexibility to work remotely from a mutually agreed-upon location.
Roles and Responsibilities

Support and mentor others in the detailed application of medium to extra high voltage utility substation transformers including (but not limited to) mechanical & electrical drawings, specifications and selection, communications, protective relaying, studies, calculations, proposal development, and cost estimates.

Perform factory inspections, witness factory testing, and monitor field services such as transformer field assembly, vacuum processing and field testing. Interpret transformer test results such as power factor, single phase excitation, winding resistance, TTR and DGA's. Field experience in regard to these tests is preferred.

Participate with Independent Transformer Consultants in design reviews of the transformer active part and participate in coil, pre-tanking and other observations during transformer manufacturing, with Independent Transformer Consultants and independently when necessary. Travel within and outside the United States to visit transformer factories and clients to perform these activities. The safety of the individual during these travels is of the utmost importance to POWER.
  • Serve as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the company's KMP (Knowledge Management Program) for transformers in the transmission and distribution market
  • Significant customer contact including in the development and communication of marketing strategy with key clients
  • Organize and oversee the implementation of POWER's quality process and management system. Work to produce deliverables that meet internal/external quality expectations
  • Develop and lead internal/external technical training at corporate events
  • Regularly prepare and present white papers and technical content marketing pieces.
  • Actively engaged in leadership positions within nationally recognized technical societies
Required Education/Experience
  • BSEE (BS in Electrical Engineering)or BSEET (BS in Electrical Engineering Technology)degree, from an accredited university preferably with a power option. MSEE (MS in Electrical Engineering) strongly preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) or the equivalent combination of education and experience with the ability to obtain a PE license.
  • Experience in 15kV through 500kV power transformer applications and IEEE/ANSI transformer standards
  • Experience in mentoring lesser experienced members enabling them to execute technically challenging work that they could not perform without technical guidance
  • Extensive knowledge base and skill set in the application and purchasing of power transformers for the electric utility market
  • Knowledge base and skill set in the in area of transmission and distribution engineering for the electric utility industry is preferred
  • Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
Desired Education/Experience
  • Twenty (20) or more years' experience in utility substation market is preferred with fifteen (15) years or more preferred in the application and purchasing of power transformers or related functions
  • Knowledge and experience with IEC and CSA transformer standards would be a plus
  • Familiarity with 765 kV transformer design is a bonus
