Core duties

  • Install and configure SQL Server instances, manage patching.
    • Testing across multiple environments prior to production
  • Perform backups (full, differentials, and transaction log), validate restores, and automate scheduled jobs
  • Manage access/security apply proper logins, users, roles and permissions when needed; validate Transparent Data Encryption, data masking where applicable.
  • Monitor server health and performance. Resolve issues related to SQL Server
  • Work with Development team and Business Intelligence teams to assist in timely matter
  • Maximize use of current tools and software, Lepide, Kaseya, and help integrate new tools/software to increase proficiency to detect issues
  • Document work with detail
  • Review/Update daily email alerts report issues to other teams when needed

Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting

  • Index maintenance rebuilding or reorganizing indexes, updating statistics, and using the Database Tuning Advisor.
  • Detecting and resolving blocking, deadlocks, and connection problems using DMVs and SQL Server Profiler.
  • Query performance optimization through execution plan analysis, parameter sniffing resolution, and tempdb management.

Backup, Recovery, and High Availability

  • Implementing disaster recovery with backup strategies, point-in-time restores, and log shipping.
  • Configuring high availability solutions: Always On Availability Groups, Database Mirroring, Failover Clustering, and Replication.
  • Managing recovery models (Simple, Full, Bulk-Logged) to balance backup/recovery needs and transaction log growth.

Automation and Scripting

  • Automating common tasks using SQL Server Agent jobs, maintenance plans, and PowerShell scripts.
  • Managing patches, service packs, and cumulative updates with minimal downtime.

Auditing, Compliance, and Documentation

  • Setting up auditing with SQL Server Audit, Extended Events, and server logs for compliance and security monitoring.
  • Documenting instance configurations, user access, job schedules, and backup histories.
  • Staying current with new features in recent SQL Server versions (e.g., Query Store, Accelerated Database Recovery, Data Classification).
