Location: Monrovia, CA (Hybrid- 2-3 days onsite)
Duration: 6+ months contract
Senior Data Engineer
Responsibilities
- Landscape discovery & documentation: Map systems/entities/lineage and data contracts; identify gaps/tech debt; maintain runbooks and data dictionaries.
- Partner across teams: Translate ambiguous requests into concrete data solutions; collaborate with application teams, other data teams, vendors, and DBAs on interfaces, SLAs, and data contracts.
- Own SQL-centric pipelines: Design, build, and operate ETL/ELT at the data layer using stored procedures, functions, views, triggers across SQL Server on-prem and Azure SQL; implement scheduling, idempotency, retries, alerting, and safe rollback/backfill practices.
- Warehousing & data marts: Enhance existing warehouses/marts; implement incremental loads/CDC, late-arriving handling, and publish curated, analytics-ready datasets (including those consumed by Tableau).
- Tableau: Build and optimize Tableau dashboards/workbooks; design certified data sources; manage Tableau Server essentials (projects, permissions, extracts/refresh schedules) and troubleshoot refresh issues end-to-end.
- SQL-driven investigation & support: Triage operational/business tickets by writing complex queries, reviewing/adjusting stored code, and running targeted diagnostics to pinpoint anomalies; propose and execute safe data fixes with clear documentation.
- Modernization enablement: Support on-prem to Azure transition by refactoring SQL pipelines, validating data parity, and executing auditable cutovers with rollback plans.
Must-Have Skills
- Expert SQL/T-SQL: Advanced query design and performance tuning for analytic workloads; proficiency with stored procedures, triggers, functions, views, indexing/partitioning, reading execution plans, and diagnosing contention (partnering with DBAs for instance-level items).
- Pipelines & reliability: Proven delivery of production ETL/ELT with CDC/watermarking, error handling, retries, monitoring/alerting, and SLA stewardship.
- Tableau Desktop & Server: Dashboard design, semantic/data-source modeling, extracts vs. live connections, Server projects/permissions/schedules, and refresh troubleshooting.
- Ops & debugging mindset: Skilled at reconciliation, anomaly detection, impact analysis, and crafting auditable repair/backfill scripts.
- Communication & stakeholder management: Clear written/verbal updates; able to clarify needs with non-technical partners and drive decisions across application/data teams, vendors, business operations, and DBAs.
- Cloud migration experience: Contributions to SQL-backed on-prem to cloud transitions (Azure SQL), including validation strategies, cutover runbooks, and rollback/testing.
- Version control & teamwork: Comfortable with Git workflows (branching, PRs, reviews) for SQL and related configuration.
- Nice to have (preferred, not required): Ability to read/write Java (e.g., Spring Batch patterns/JDBC) and Python utilities for orchestration, validation, or glue code when needed.
