Job Overview

Our client in Boston, MA is looking for a highly skilled Senior Power BI Developer / Power BI Architect to design, build, and optimize enterprise BI solutions. The ideal candidate will lead architecture, data modeling, dashboard development, governance standards, and performance optimization across large-scale datasets.

This is a hands-on senior technical role, responsible for guiding the organization’s BI roadmap, building scalable data models, and driving best practices across analytics teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of advanced Power BI dashboards, reports, and data models.
  • Design enterprise-grade semantic models, star schemas, and optimized datasets using Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.
  • Develop DAX measures, calculated tables, KPIs, and complex business logic.
  • Own end-to-end BI solution delivery—data ingestion, modeling, transformations, visualization, and deployment.
  • Implement Power BI governance, workspace management, RLS/OLS security, permissions, and deployment standards.
  • Optimize report performance and dataset refresh strategies (DirectQuery, Import, Composite Models).
  • Develop and automate ETL pipelines using Power Query (M) and integrate with Azure SQL, Synapse, Data Lake, Databricks, etc.
  • Collaborate with business teams to translate requirements into scalable BI solutions.
  • Establish best practices for DAX coding, dataset documentation, data quality, and version control.
  • Work with DevOps teams to implement CI/CD for Power BI, deployment pipelines, and automated refresh strategies.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, code reviews, and data modeling guidance to BI developers.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years in Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, or Analytics.
  • 5+ years of advanced, hands-on Power BI development experience.
  • Expert-level knowledge of:
    • DAX (complex measures, time intelligence, optimization techniques)
    • Power Query (M language)
    • Data modeling (star schema, snowflake, composite models)
    • Power BI Service admin features (RLS/OLS, gateways, workspaces)
  • Strong experience working with:
    • Azure SQL / Synapse / Data Lake / Databricks
    • SQL programming & performance tuning
    • Enterprise data warehousing concepts
  • Proven ability to architect BI solutions for large, enterprise organizations.
  • Experience integrating Power BI with DevOps pipelines (CI/CD).
  • Ability to interact with business leaders, gather requirements, and deliver actionable insights.
  • Experience with Power BI Premium / Fabric (capacity planning, workspace optimization).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse, Data Pipelines, Notebooks.
  • Experience with other visualization platforms (Tableau, Qlik) is a plus.
  • Prior consulting or lead role managing BI teams.
