National Grid is hiring a Principal Transmission Planning Engineer - Successful candidate can be located in either our Waltham, MA, Boston, MA, Brooklyn, NY or our Bloomington, MN office.
Job Purpose
National Grid Ventures (NGV) is looking for a knowledgeable, curious, and driven Principal Transmission Planning Engineer to join our Grid Integration and Planning Team. This individual will support our competitive transmission projects by carrying out transmission analyses and managing interconnection processes in MISO. They will ensure that work products are generated to provide sufficient decision-making information to management and to effectuate the interconnection of projects the transmission system. This role will provide support to key initiatives driving NGV's growth and partnerships throughout the US.
Key Accountabilities
Perform, lead, or facilitate engineering and transmission assessments and analyses.
Support and advise on production cost modeling, economic and regional market evaluations to assist in key strategic insights, identify or confirm project opportunities and solutions.
Apply innovative approaches to simulation and analysis that can help identify or support new initiatives.
Lead technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships.
Document, present and report findings and justifications. Help prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
Support or lead on siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings, if required.
Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels when necessary.
Oversee consultants, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Business Development team.
Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across National Grid functions in the US and UK.
Qualifications
Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields. Power systems focus desired.
Strong experience in transmission system analysis required.
Demonstrated ability to translate complex model outputs into business insight & articulate the impact of results.
Broad knowledge of US power industry standards, structures, policies, regulations & market fundamentals is essential.
Familiarity with recent trends and technologies in electric transmission, onshore and offshore wind, other large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation and emerging technologies.
Strong track record of relevant professional experience in projects, including developing business cases, optioneering, data analysis, estimating and work structure planning.
Flair for handling & manipulating data to forecast, derive trends and test sensitivities.
Interest in offshore wind project development and execution.
Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge and build credibility based on personally derived recommendations.
Computational literacy including handling large data sets is mandatory.
Fundamental understanding of the components of electric transmission facilities including key risks and opportunities is required.
Ability to develop tools and processes to facilitate best practice & knowledge sharing.

South Eastern MN $149,000 - $175,000 a year
