The IBM iSeries (AS400) Systems Engineer III is a senior-level position responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and support of the company's IBM iSeries (AS400) environment. This individual will be a technical expert with deep knowledge of IBM i operating systems, hardware, software, and related technologies. This role also requires strong automation and scripting skills to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
System Administration: Manage and maintain the IBM i operating system, including PTF installation, security configurations, user management, performance tuning, backup and recovery procedures, and disaster recovery planning.
Hardware Support: Work closely with vendors to install, configure, and maintain IBM iSeries hardware, including servers, disk storage, and networking components.
Software Support: Install, configure, and support IBM i software applications, including ERP systems, database management systems, and custom-developed applications.
Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to ensure optimal performance and availability.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution: Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues related to the IBM i environment, including hardware failures, software errors, and performance problems.
Project Management: Lead or participate in projects to upgrade, enhance, or migrate the IBM i environment.
Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation of the IBM i environment, including automation scripts and procedures.
Training and Mentoring: Provide technical guidance and training to less experienced team members on IBM i and automation practices.
Vendor Management: Build and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure timely and effective support.
Security: Ensure the security of the IBM i environment by implementing and maintaining security policies, procedures, and best practices, including automated security checks and vulnerability scans.
Automation and Scripting:
Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to streamline system administration tasks, backups, software deployments, and system monitoring.
Utilize scripting languages like CL, Python, or PowerShell to automate repetitive tasks and improve efficiency.
Implement automation solutions for system provisioning, configuration management, and incident response.
Monitor and maintain the integrity and functionality of automation scripts.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
7+ years of experience in IBM i (AS400) system administration.
Deep understanding of IBM i operating system concepts and architecture.
Proven expertise in IBM i hardware, software, and related technologies.
Extensive experience in troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Project management experience is a plus.
3+ years of experience in automation and scripting on the IBM i platform.
Proficiency in scripting languages like CL, Python, or PowerShell.
Certifications: IBM Certified System Administrator or other relevant IBM i certifications are preferred.
