Position Summary:

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is dedicated to meeting the IT needs of UC Irvine's faculty, students, and staff. Our goal is to lead in IT services and deliver innovative solutions that support the University's research, education, and community service objectives. The University of California is one of the largest public university systems in the United States, with 10 campuses and a community comprising 280,000 students, 227,000 faculty and staff, and over 2 million alumni worldwide. You'll join a small Agile team focused on developing applications to enhance UC Irvine's research profile, streamline HR and compliance tasks, and support teaching and learning across the campus. While our team primarily uses Typescript, Next.js, and Azure OpenAI, we are open to adopting other technologies as needed based on the changing AI landscape.

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Executive Application Support, the AI Software Engineer applies skills as a seasoned, experienced software professional with a full understanding of industry practices, community standards and relevant policies and procedures to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Develops and maintains web and data applications, integrated with generative AI, that address the varied needs of a university setting. Resolves a wide range of issues including designing, coding, and implementing web applications that integrate with external AI services for natural language processing, machine learning, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Demonstrates competency in selecting tools, methods, and techniques to create user-friendly and secure applications tailored for academic staff, administrative staff, and students.

Required:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional development experience using a modern web application framework. Minimum of two (2) years of database experience, including relational or NoSQL. Minimum of one (1) year of experience developing JavaScript or Typescript using a modern framework such as React or Next.js.
  • Experience working directly with customers or end-users. Experience developing code-driven automated tests such as unit, functional, and integration tests.
  • Experience using Git version control system.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Intermediate knowledge of secure software development. Strong proficiency in web application development languages and frameworks, such as Typescript and Next.js.
  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation, and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Capable of understanding customer requirements and converting them into user stories, acceptance criteria, and software designs, ensuring the final product meets customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Thorough experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source tools and online services that reduce maintenance or enable new functionality.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms. Ability to review code written by other developers and provide effective feedback;
  • Experience receiving code review feedback.
  • Demonstrated software repository skills.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and manage unit and integration tests.
  • Thorough experience with common programming tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
  • Ability to apply large language models like Azure OpenAI to solve a variety of customer needs.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn and make use of new programming languages, frameworks, and language model services.
  • Ability to mentor and provide effective development guidance to other software developers.


Preferred:

  • Experience developing applications that are powered by large language models.
  • Experience integrating applications with large language model APIs such as Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, or Amazon Bedrock.
  • Experience developing applications that are deployed to cloud platforms like AWS or Azure.

Special Conditions Required:

  • Must pass a background check. Position is eligible for up to 100% remote work. Must reside in the United States.
