About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies-from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups-use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team

The Go and Java Infrastructure teams are responsible for making Stripe's Go and Java developers happy and productive. We work on tools, processes, and code refactoring to accelerate Stripe engineering as Stripe scales.

We're looking for people with an interest in building the tools to improve the day to day experience of Engineers in Stripe. The ideal candidate will have a mix of technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: services, developer tooling, and build systems. Most importantly, you should have a passion for solving developer experience problems, and a pragmatic ability to ship results iteratively. You'll be working on a mix of fault tolerant distributed systems and software which runs on individual developer machines.
What you'll do

We work with a large, mission critical code base used by hundreds of engineers across the globe, who work on hundreds of discrete services and data jobs. You will lead the team who is responsible for the infrastructure used to create and access high quality, non-identifiable, test data for all services and teams at Stripe.

You will be responsible for defining and driving the core feature set of the platform, as well as the user experience of using the platform. The scope includes engineers who iterate on features locally, and engineers who run end-to-end tests in any supported deployment environment such as QA or pre-production.
Responsibilities
  • Work with other Stripe leaders to design and lead developer productivity best practice
  • Empower the engineering team to achieve a high level of technical productivity, reliability, and simplicity
  • Recruit great engineers, in collaboration with Stripe's recruiting team
  • Help engineers advance in their careers and develop new skills
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe's engineering management team
  • Work with your engineering teams across Stripe to ensure the capabilities they need to safely, and reliably, deploy to production are available.
  • Own the end-to-end experience of tools. This includes working with Stripe engineers to understand pain points and delivering improvements to their day-to-day workflows.
  • Supporting efficient testing to support teams developing new or migrating old services and data jobs.
  • Developing & maintaining state-of-the-art developer tooling and increasing tooling reliability.
Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements
  • 3+ years of people management experience
  • Hands-on experience building tools that are used daily by other developers (e.g. CI, build support, test frameworks, devboxes)
  • A passion for supporting developer productivity
  • Successfully recruited and built great teams
  • The ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy and responsibility
  • Clear and persuasive writing and in-person communication

Preferred qualifications
  • You are comfortable working with geographically distributed teams
  • You have managed teams that designed and operated critical infrastructure, particularly with a broad remit across core capabilities
  • You are empathetic to customer needs but visionary enough to not just deliver a faster horse
  • You are comfortable planning in quarters, and can set a vision for several years
  • You are excited about collaborating with teammates across Stripe's organization, to provide a wonderful user experience for key developer workflows

Hybrid work at Stripe
Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.
