About the Role:

We need a skilled COBOL Software Engineer with deep expertise in mainframe systems and legacy application support. This role involves leading and mentoring a team of entry-level to mid-level engineers, providing technical oversight, and guiding modernization efforts that transition legacy COBOL systems toward more contemporary platforms. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in COBOL programming and related mainframe technologies, and be open to learning modern languages such as Python and Java as part of a long-term roadmap to replace legacy code.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direction, oversight, and coaching for a team of entry-level to mid-level software engineers working on basic to moderately complex tasks
  • Be accountable for decisions that influence team resources, budget, tactical operations, and the execution and implementation of processes and procedures
  • Ensure successful collaboration across teams and stakeholders
  • Identify and mitigate issues to execute a book of work while escalating issues as necessary
  • Provide input to leadership regarding budget, approach, and technical considerations to improve operational efficiencies and functionality for the team
  • Create a culture of diversity, opportunity, inclusion, and respect for team members
  • Prioritize diverse representation across the team

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of applied experience in COBOL programming and mainframe systems
  • Formal training or certification in technology project management concepts
  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and mentoring technical teams
  • Hands-on experience with COBOL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, MQ messaging, stored procedures, DB2 utilities, JCL, ChangeMan, NDM, and file transfer mechanisms
  • Experience managing large-scale mainframe implementations and systems
  • In-depth knowledge of the services industry and its IT infrastructure
  • Practical experience with cloud-native technologies
  • Openness to learning Python and Java as part of modernization efforts
  • This is a full-time W2 role, not C2C
