Description:
Maintains operation of multi-user computer systems, including coordination of infrastructure and cloud responsibilities. Develops and designs core operating system builds. Responsible for coding, virtualization, and automation of systems. Sets up administrator and service accounts, maintains an active directory of users and system documentation, tunes system performance, installs system-wide software, and allocates mass storage space. Assesses and resolves user access problems related to security controls to minimize business impact and risk exposure. Identifies and evaluates vendor products and establishes vendor monitoring and tracking processes. Performs capacity planning and monitors/tunes systems. Recommends appropriate platforms for purchase, coordinates installation, and provides backup recovery. Serves as a point of escalation for major incidents that are unresolved at the helpdesk level. Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources. May draft general IT communications to end-users including notifications of outages/downtimes. May serve as the primary liaison for mergers, acquisitions, and divesture activities as it relates to user access, network, security, and support.
Background/Need:
The Division is in need of 2 Linux System Administrators to support the development of new technologies that enable worldwide networked operations for the military and other government agencies. The division addresses the needs of next-generation satellite, airborne, and terrestrial networks using its core expertise in radio frequency (RF), fiber and free-space optics, cyber security, network protocols and services, information operations, communications processing, and speech and language technologies. The division is extensively involved in field experimentation and measurement campaigns to verify algorithms and architectural concepts in operational environments. |
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Linux systems administrator with some Solaris experience.
- Domains: IT Infrastructure, Networking, system architecture design, system configuration management, system troubleshooting
- Responsible for management, administration, and support of systems infrastructure in Group.
- Responsible for configuring and maintaining (physical and virtual) servers and researcher workstations in a secure RMF compliant and documented manor.
- Support additional technologies as they are adopted by the Laboratory.
- Responsible for vulnerability remediation on secure and unclassified Laboratory systems. Addressing Cat 1, 2, 3 issues in a timely manner
- Recognizing and troubleshooting issues with developer s machines as they occur across a variety of Operating Systems. Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc.
- Perform all related duties as assigned.

Must Have:
- Operating Systems: Red hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris and VMware Hardware: Dell
- Software/applications: RedHat IDM, McAfee; Enterprise Central Logging, LDAP, Splunk, NetApp, VMware vCenter/ESXI/vSAN, Github, ACAS
- Networking applications and protocols: TCP/IP, DNS/DHCP, NTP, SSH
- Programming Languages: Ansible, Shell Scripting, PowerShell.
- Skilled at centralized authentication (SSSD, IDM, Active Directory) and centralized sudo administration via IDM
Preferred Technical Skills:
- Linux Realtime Kernel support experience is a bonus
- Juniper and/or Cisco experience is a plus
- Python/PyPI experience is a plus
- Docker and/or Podman is a plus
Non-Technical Skills:
- Candidates must be, team oriented, enthusiastic, innovative and motivated self-starters able to work independently, or with a group, to achieve program requirements.
- Candidates must possess strong oral and written communications skills and must be able to present findings/results to internal and external organizations.
- Adhere to Laboratory policies and procedures
- Ability to work with researchers to troubleshoot diverse and custom written applications in a secure environment.
Applicable Education and Professional Accreditation:
- Degree in one of the following disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or a related technical discipline
- Certification(s) in one or more of the following disciplines: Solaris administration, Red Hat, VMWare, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP); CompTIA Security+; Linux Professional Institute
- Certification: Any prior military experience is a plus. They will modify the years of experience or the required bachelor s degree if someone has the majority of the technical skills and a military background.
Others:
Clearance: Candidates MUST HAVE an active secret clearance to be submitted to this position. STRONG preference for candidates who have a top active secret clearance. One of the two openings will require clearing to a TS / SCI level. Please ensure your candidate are aware of this requirement.
Interview: Candidates will have an initial zoom screening and then candidates will do a second-round interview with a wider audience. An IN-PERSON interview for the second round is STRONGLY preferred but they will do Zoom if necessary. Our strong preference is for a local candidate.
Work from home: This role is 100% onsite and will be working in closed spaces.
