Job Details

Title: Network Engineer
Duration: 12 Months
Location: Columbia, SC 29201 Hybrid (2 days onsite per week)

Note: Candidate must be a current South Carolina resident. No relocation allowed.


Project Scope

A State Agency s Division of Technology Services is seeking a highly motivated Network Engineer to support mission-critical systems and statewide programs. The role involves implementing, maintaining, and securing enterprise-level network solutions. The engineer will collaborate with architects and cross-functional technical and security teams to design and support a stable and secure network infrastructure that meets agency requirements.

The position supports statewide initiatives, including automated systems used by internal stakeholders and partner organizations.


Position Description

The ideal candidate will have expert-level experience monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting statewide networks (WAN, LAN, wireless) with a strong focus on Cisco and Meraki technologies. Hands-on experience is required for configuring and maintaining:

  • Cisco Firewalls: ASA5508-X, ASA5585-X, FirePower 4110, FirePower 2120

  • Cisco Switches: 3750, C9500, C9300, Nexus 5K, Nexus 7K

  • Meraki Devices: Switches, wireless APs, MX450 firewalls

Additional experience with Cisco Security Manager is required. The role also involves remote troubleshooting with county IT teams statewide, so familiarity with a variety of firewall platforms is expected.

Secondary preferred experience includes: Cisco AnyConnect Client, 802.1X, Active Directory, DNS, ADFS, PKI, and PowerShell.

The engineer will develop implementation and test plans for deployments, support multiple network initiatives, and provide knowledge transfer to peers. Candidates may lead projects from inception to completion, including requirements gathering, architecture design, and full-cycle solution delivery. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.


Major Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support statewide site-to-site VPN tunnel infrastructure.

  • Develop detailed implementation and test plans for Cisco/Meraki technologies.

  • Research, analyze, and support software releases and upgrades.

  • Document activities and updates using the IT service desk system.

  • Monitor and analyze system logs; recommend improvements for performance, reliability, scalability, and security.

  • Provide remote troubleshooting support for internal and external IT systems.

  • Communicate system-level impacts and collaborate on mitigation strategies.

  • Explain component requirements and capabilities within broader system architecture.

  • Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure project success.


Required Qualifications

  • 4 6 years of experience with:

    • Cisco Firewalls

    • Cisco Routers

    • Cisco Switches

    • Cisco CCNA-level work

    • Cisco CCNP-level work

    • Wireshark

  • Cisco CCNA certification

  • Cisco CCNP certification

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate infrastructure design decisions and technical details clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 6 years of experience with:

    • Cisco Client

    • Cisco VPN Technologies
