Project Duration: 12 Months

Work Location: Columbia, South Carolina (Remote) (Must be SC resident, 25% onsite travel for meetings)

Hours/Week: 40 Hours

Work Hours: 8 AM to 5 PM

Job Summary:

The Senior SQL DBA will work closely with scrum/sprint development teams, Client s Oracle and IDMS DBAs, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless data management, performance optimization, and compliance with best practices. Key focus areas include data modeling, migration, performance analysis, and 24x7 support, all while adhering to Microsoft SQL standards in enterprise-class, multi-tier web-based applications.

Daily Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior SQL DBA will collaborate with project development teams (scrum/sprint teams), Clemson Oracle Database Administrators, and IDMS DBAs to deliver comprehensive DBA support for numerous application and infrastructure databases. Primary duties include:

  • Advising development and product teams on best approaches for required data model extensions and/or changes.
  • Providing hands-on SQL development and application support consistent with Microsoft best practices.
  • Collaborating with Clemson's Oracle and IDMS database administration teams to maintain test, staging, and production databases, and developing operations procedures for database management.
  • Developing and executing data migration plans as needed to accommodate transfers from existing data stores.
  • Coordinating with outside entities, including vendors for other systems/services, providers, professional associations, and other State agencies.
  • Analyzing performance data, recommending courses of action, and implementing best solutions to achieve optimum performance.
  • Participating in a 24x7 on-call support rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SC seeks a Senior Microsoft SQL professional with proven knowledge, experience, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to ensure success on this high-visibility project.

Required Skills

  • The Senior SQL DBA role emphasizes four major attributes: software development leadership, project management skills, people skills, and domain knowledge in enterprise-class multi-tier web-based application development projects. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in all areas. Required skills, ranked in order of importance, are:
  • 7+ years of experience as a SQL DBA.
  • 5+ years of experience with SQL Server.
  • 5+ years of experience with High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HA/DR).
  • 3+ years of experience with T-SQL.
  • 3+ years of experience with PowerShell scripting.
  • 7+ years of experience with performance tuning, backup/recovery, and security.
  • Proven DBA experience in supporting enterprise applications in Linux environments (preferably including Windows and Linux).
  • Experience with Data Guard.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting a development team implementing primarily web-based solutions using SQL as the database.

Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of Oracle Enterprise Manager.
  • Healthcare industry experience and/or experience managing PHI/PII data.
  • Experience in data encryption and traffic encryption.
  • Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) experience.
  • Vendor management experience.
  • Medicaid operations experience.
  • Public sector experience (a plus).
  • Understanding of IT development and implementation projects.
  • Understanding of database scalability and operations.
  • Project planning experience, including effort estimation on technical tasks and resource allocation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to give presentations to project management. Strong proficiency in English is required.
  • Impeccable integrity (essential for a high-visibility project impacting public funds; candidates must be confident in decision-making and willing to speak out when necessary).
  • Willingness and ability to effectively engage with people and organizations on a continuous basis.

Required Education and Certifications

  • Education: Bachelor s degree in a technical, business, or related field. A Master s degree is desirable.
  • Certifications: None required. SQL training/certification from a recognized source is beneficial.
