Job Title: Process Simulation Designer
Location: Southfield, MI Work Arrangement: Hybrid (4 days onsite, 1 day remote)
Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Process Simulation Designer with a strong background in Body-in-White (BIW) tooling fixtures and mechanical design for automotive manufacturing. This role focuses on robotic simulation, tool validation, and process feasibility within a 3D environment.
This is not a product design or engineering role. Candidates with backgrounds in sheet metal, injection molding, HVAC, or axle/suspension design will not be considered.
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills
Proficiency in Siemens Process Simulate software
Experience with Siemens NX, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Excel
Familiarity with Catia and other 3D modeling tools
Strong understanding of BIW tooling fixture design and automotive assembly processes
Experience
4-5+ years in process simulation for automotive body shops
Hands-on experience with robotic programming and simulation tools
Ability to travel (5-20%) for project support
Responsibilities
Simulation & Design
Conduct feasibility studies and define robotic/human operations in 3D environments
Select and place equipment (robots, conveyors, tools)
Validate tooling and develop 3D layouts for robotic simulation
Create reach studies and kinematic models
Simulate robot movements to verify cycle time, reachability, and safety compliance
Develop and optimize offline robot programs (Comau, Kuka, ABB, Fanuc, etc.)
Configure Robot Controller Simulation (RCS) and validate cycle diagrams
Process Engineering
Distribute weld/joint paths and select appropriate welding guns
Apply process path logic for technologies like sealing and arc welding
Run swept volume studies and verify feasibility of solutions
Collaborate with stakeholders to gather project requirements
Create technical documentation and support customer reviews
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
Line layout planning and robot application basics
Safety standards (OSHA, NIOSH, customer-specific)
Understanding of robot-PLC communication and IO logic
Experience with automation processes: Spot Welding, Arc Welding, Sealer/Dispense, Riveting, Palletization, Paint, etc.
Ability to retrieve and upload robot programs, and validate OLPs
Strong written communication and documentation skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
