Platform Operations Engineer

Job Details

STAND 8 provides end to end IT solutions to enterprise partners across the United States and with offices in Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, and more including internationally in Mexico and India.
We are seeking a Platform Operations Engineer to join our team supporting a global media & entertainment client. This fully remote role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who thrives at the intersection of backend development, infrastructure, and operations. You'll play a key role in ensuring platform reliability, performance, and scalability while contributing to the modernization of backend systems. This position blends elements of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Database Administration (DBA), Infrastructure Engineering, and Network Operations Center (NOC) support. You'll be the first line of defense for backend-related issues and a strategic contributor to infrastructure evolution.
This role is fully remote working Pacific Time hours.
Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the operational liaison for backend engineering in cross-functional forums including SRE, DBA, Infrastructure, and NOC.

  • Represent backend priorities in change advisory boards (CAB), production readiness assessments (PRAC), and other operational meetings.

  • Respond to backend-impacting incidents, coordinating with SRE and DBA teams to drive resolution and root cause analysis.

  • Collaborate on the design and deployment of new infrastructure components and platform services.

  • Define scaling strategies, reliability benchmarks, and deployment patterns in partnership with SRE and Infrastructure teams.

  • Build automation and tooling to support infrastructure modernization and service migration efforts.

  • Troubleshoot production issues using logs, metrics, traces, and configuration data.

  • Monitor and optimize API performance using tools like JMeter and other load testing frameworks.

  • Enhance observability through improved dashboards, alerts, and investigative workflows.

  • Develop internal tools to streamline operational workflows and reduce manual effort.

  • Expand monitoring and instrumentation across legacy and modern services.

  • Improve deployment efficiency and incident response through automation.

  • Work closely with backend developers to ensure new features are properly instrumented and monitored.

  • Partner with DBAs to optimize database performance and manage schema changes.

  • Align with SRE teams on reliability goals, capacity planning, and infrastructure readiness.

  • Identify and address weaknesses in system design, configuration, and monitoring.

  • Use downtime between incidents to proactively improve platform stability and reduce future operational load.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience supporting large-scale distributed backend systems in cloud-native environments.

  • Strong understanding of AWS and infrastructure patterns such as autoscaling, service meshes, distributed caching, and load balancing.

  • Ability to interpret backend code (Java or similar) for debugging and performance analysis.

  • Solid grasp of relational database principles and optimization techniques.

  • Experience building internal tools and automation for operational efficiency.

  • Skilled in end-to-end debugging using observability data (logs, metrics, traces).

  • Strong communicator with the ability to represent engineering needs in cross-functional settings.

  • High ownership mindset focused on reliability, performance, and operational excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with infrastructure modernization or migration projects.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation.

  • Background in performance engineering, load testing, or capacity planning.

  • Hands-on experience with observability platforms such as Datadog, Grafana, or Honeycomb.

  • Exposure to media delivery, streaming, or high-throughput API environments.
