Job Description

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.

The Role

Our team is looking for a creative and highly technical Senior ADAS Systems Safety Engineer who can lead ADAS System Safety work on Sensing/Perception, ADAS Sensors and ADAS controllers.

This work directly supports overall System Safety Case development for all ADAS features from L1 to L4 which are critical in achieving GM's path to Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion!

In this role you will provide technical leadership to a team of ADAS System Safety Engineers on Sensing / Perception, ADAS Sensors and ADAS Controllers. This role will also apply system level thinking while partnering across the engineering organization to deploy System Safety solutions across our diverse and evolving technology sets.

In this position you will utilize your thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the System Safety for ADAS Sensing/Perception SW and all related HW. You will apply your broad technical knowledge to guide and lead successful safety cases of ADAS features from L1 to L4.

This role is responsible for owning the technical direction to SSEs of delivering safety case to meet vehicle deadlines. Proficient in all areas of the VDP process to align Safety deliverables. This activity includes guiding and supporting Safety reviews with PRB members and technical reviews with partners.

This role is also managing a team of problem solving. Work requires a deep understanding of system safety process. Helps set direction and independently makes decisions based on general practices and procedures. Strongly skilled in Project Planning. This activity includes independently leading global and/or GMNA multi-functional teams for issue resolution. Exercises highly independent judgement and creative solution development with minimal consultation from Principal Engineer and EGL.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Lead a technical team of ADAS System Safety Engineers (Sensing/Perception, ADAS Sensors, ADAS Controllers) to develop systems safety analysis, hazard identification, and risk mitigations using both qualitative and quantitative methods align with GM System Safety Process and ISO26262
  • Lead System Safety strategy developments on new content to deploy safety strategies that balance System Safety with feature availability & performance
  • Lead application of agile methodologies to internal Safety Case work partnering closely with cross-functional teams
  • Support Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) approaches for new feature development
  • Employ varied analysis techniques including hazard analysis, SEFA, STPA, fault tree analysis, interface analysis, FMEA, software safety analysis etc. within responsible scope
  • Collaborate with product engineering, software engineering, development, verification, and validation teams to ensure consistent and sufficient safety strategy implementations across ADAS features
  • Guide development of external suppliers to facilitate timely delivery of safety critical system content
  • Stay abreast of new technology and safety analysis techniques
  • Mentor & develop internal and external organizational partners (including global teams) on safety critical system and process-specific knowledge

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related area of expertise
  • 7+ years of engineering experience in product development with safety critical systems or related area of expertise
  • Ability to understand complex technical systems
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to diverse global teams
  • Hands-on experience with hazard analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), software safety analysis, and other safety analysis tools and techniques
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262 and other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C
  • Understanding of applicable standards to this role such as ISO 21448, and UL 4600 etc..
  • Understanding of emerging standards of ISO 8800 AI/ML (Road vehicles - Safety and artificial intelligence) and ISO/TS 5083 (Road vehicles - Safety for automated driving systems - Design, verification and validation)
  • Understanding of fundamentals of Semiconductor and SoC (System on Chip)
  • Travel as required (


What Can Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science
  • 10+ or more years of engineering experience with systems safety analysis, systems, or active safety features including Human machine interactions
  • Experience with Object Sensing technologies (camera, radar, lidar), sensor rationalization schemes and related limitations
  • Experience working with safety diagnostic monitors
  • Software design, analysis, development, validation
  • Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition
  • Knowledge of AI/ML
  • DFSS Black Belt
