Job Description

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.

The Role

We're looking for a Lead Materials Engineer with strong industry experience in materials science and automotive applications to drive materials innovation across a range of electrification propulsion systems. In this role, you'll lead material specification and roadmap development and make material selection decisions in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of materials engineers, design release engineers, VDDV, testing labs, and suppliers. A strong innovative mindset is key, as you'll be developing and implementing solutions to address materials challenges in electrification propulsion system.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

Leadership of material selection strategies, writing material specifications, trouble-shooting material related issues, developing and approving new materials in support of the Battery, Structural and Energy Management Materials Engineering teams. Own the design, development, testing and control of engineering projects where decisions are made within the limits of general practices and standards. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Lead material strategy and specification development for applications in battery packs, structural components, and energy management systems.
  • Author and maintain material specifications, ensuring alignment with performance, durability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Resolve complex material-related issues, leveraging deep technical expertise and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Drive the development and approval of new materials, working closely with suppliers, labs, and internal stakeholders to align material choices with product development goals.
  • Integrate materials engineering into standard work, including BOMs, eSORs, ECR/EDR, and quality documentation.
  • Partner with design, manufacturing, and supplier teams to implement cost-effective, high-performance material solutions.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Champion innovation, and proactively document technical advancements through invention disclosures, patent filings, trade secret protection, and external publications.
  • Mentor and develop other engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.


Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Polymer Science, or other related degree
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex and unconventional problems
  • Deep knowledge of materials in electrification propulsion system
  • Proven ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries to build alignment and drive results
  • Demonstrated leadership through influence, with a track record of guiding teams and initiatives


What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master of Science, or PhD in Engineering/Science
  • 10+ years of Materials Engineering
  • Technical expertise in materials science and engineering with a proven record of external publications.
  • Black Belt DFSS Certification
  • Hands-on experience with the following automotive technologies
    • Materials - Aluminum, steel, plastics/composites, batteries, adhesives, and coatings
    • High voltage components
    • Materials failure analyses and tests
    • Propulsion battery pack design
    • Thermal management of high voltage assemblies
