OVERVIEW

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Editor to support content development requirements for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The ideal candidate will have experience writing and editing science or health-related content for both professional and general audiences, including peer-reviewed publications. Experience editing content about the treatment and prevention of substance use and mental disorders is required.

DUTIES

  • Provide substantive editing for highly complex publications about the treatment and prevention of substance use and mental disorders
  • Review materials for content, clarity, consistency, grammar, format, and organization
  • Ensure overall editorial quality, including compliance with federal regulations and guidelines and adherence to internal and client standards
  • Perform final quality control reviews
  • Work within a writing and editing team to create and maintain processes and procedures that ensure consistency across multiple deliverables, including compliance with in-house style guides and quality control checklists
  • Take notes at meetings and prepare meeting reports
  • Assist with development and review of contract-required reports as needed
  • Assist with proposal development and support for other corporate projects as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in psychology/social work, public health, or English. Other science- and communications-related degrees will be considered
  • At least 10 years' experience writing and editing science and evidence-based content, preferably for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or for other federal agencies or contracting organizations involved in the health and human services field
  • Ability to engage and collaborate with a team of talented in-house staff and external consultants in the development of consensus-based publications
  • Thorough knowledge of APA and GPO styles
  • Experience writing and editing using plain language principles
  • Proven writing skills as applied to scientific and health-related content
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail, strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using MS Word styles in document development
  • High degree of proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Pro, including experience using Comments function
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours during surge periods

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong history of translating highly technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content that is written for professional and lay audiences
  • Proven ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature; grade quality of evidence and strength of recommendations; and synthesize independently, with minimal guidance from content experts
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility requirements
