The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition (MET) has an outstanding opportunity for a Data Manager to join their team.
POSITION PURPOSE
Position Purpose: The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition (MET) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (50% FTE) Data Manager to join Dr. Laura Pyle and Dr. Petter Bjornstad's collaborative medical research team. Housed within the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute at the South Lake Union campus, the Pyle laboratory applies translational data science to bridge complex biostatistics and bioinformatics findings into medical insights. The Bjornstad and Pyle laboratories focus on metabolic and hemodynamic mechanisms underlying the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D) diabetes and obesity.
Position Complexities: This position requires expertise in data management, regulatory compliance, and cross-institutional collaboration.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: The successful candidate will oversee data collection, quality assurance, and database management across multiple clinical and translational research studies while ensuring adherence to regulatory and institutional guidelines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Management 40%
Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in data management in a scientifically rigorous manner
Creatively and effectively integrate data from multiple sources to accelerate discoveries
Maintain compliance with Google Cloud Platform guidelines, HIPAA requirements, etc.
Prepare and update data management documentation including data dictionaries, training manuals and SOPs
Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutions
Participate in study team meetings and provide data management expertise for protocol development
Ensure data integrity through validation checks and audit trail maintenance
Manage database user access, permissions, and security protocols
Perform database locks, data exports, and dataset preparation for statistical analysis
Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate with IT support as needed
Maintain backup procedures and disaster recovery protocols
Data Quality Assurance 40%
Establish data validation rules and quality control procedures
Perform regular data reviews, identify discrepancies, and coordinate resolution with study teams
Generate and distribute data quality reports to study teams
Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
Assist and train team members in data entry, database navigation, and data quality standards
Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and share results with leadership
Data Summarization and Reporting 20%
Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample data
Write custom scripts to access databases
Write custom web tools for PIs and other stakeholders
Perform basic data analysis including descriptive statistics, tabulations, and visualizations
Assist with the development of bioinformatics-related programming projects
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Data Science, Systems Biology or a related field
and
2 years in academic or pharmaceutical research settings (or equivalent experience).
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches
Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C++) and willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary
Experience with Linux operating systems, high performance computing
Proficiency with REDCap
Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods
Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
Outstanding customer service skills
Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously within rigorous timelines
Potential to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team atmosphere
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
