In this role the Staff Packaging Engineer, collaborating with the Manager Packaging Engineering and Specials, will be responsible for leading packaging design projects across the Laboratory Products Division (LPD). This individual will be empowered to design, test, analyze, and select materials for new packaging and analyze current packaging for improvement opportunities. This role will collaborate with various LPD manufacturing facilities to improve all existing product packaging, address quality issues, develop and direct industry standard distribution testing (ISTA, ASTM, etc.), and drive the implementation of these projects throughout the division. The individual will engage internal resources and packaging suppliers to optimize packaging for customer experience, quality, manufacturing compatibility, and costs, with the goal of bringing outstanding packaging to Thermo Fisher Scientific. This position will have a higher focus on label design, working with Regulatory, IT and operations to validate.

How will you make an impact?

Plan, develop, model, and analyze designs for system integration to maintain requirement traceability through various subsystems and verification activities.

Lead packaging projects from conception to implementation to drive packaging design and development for new products, including sustainable solutions

Packaging Standards: Develops and uses engineering design guides and standards for common design elements. Applies packaging appropriate Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and sustainability guidelines.

Lead all aspects of the transferring of new products into production. This includes making sure the designs are manufacturable and have acceptable production yields. Work with Engineering to specify and procure vital capital equipment and fixturing.

Support and develop consistent manufacturing/quality standards and/or processes for Deviations, Change Controls, and CAPAs in the new Quality System

Label Design and Development: Design product labels to customer requirements while using a standard set of templates applying label design software Bartender.

How will you get here?

Education

Bachelors in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering degree with relevant packaging design experience. Master's degree is a plus.

Experience

Minimum 5 years' of industry-related experience

Strong proficiency with packaging industry design and test standards (ISTA, ASTM, etc.)

Experience in regulated industry with a knowledge of sterile barrier packaging and sterilization processes.

Solid understanding of low particulate and low bioburden medical device packaging, manufacturing practices, and test methods

Experience with leading packaging equipment process qualifications (IQ, OQ, PQ)

Execution of project qualification activities and closeout.

Experience with structural engineering analysis of new packaging designs

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

Solidworks (CAD), ArtiosCAD, CAPE (pallet layout), and SAP (ERP) experience.

Container leak testing experience

Willing to travel domestically and internationally (10%)

Highly motivated, organized, and detailed oriented. Self-starter with the ability to work efficiently and independently to tackle problems. Proven record leading multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously and prioritizing tasks in order of importance.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in New York is $103,100.00-$154,700.00.
