Are you passionate about creating safer, more sustainable streets? Alta is looking for a Engineering Designer II/III (Multimodal Transportation) to join our growing Baltimore design team. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your engineering skills to meaningful projects that support active transportation, equity, and environmental resilience-locally in Maryland and across the country.
In this role, you'll design innovative transportation solutions including bikeways, shared-use paths, complete streets, and streetscapes that improve safety and connectivity. You'll work at multiple scales, from early concept design to final construction documents, translating vision into real-world impact. You'll also develop high-quality graphics and technical deliverables that clearly communicate design intent.
Our team takes a collaborative approach-working closely with planners, landscape architects, graphic designers, data analysts, and community outreach specialists. This cross-disciplinary environment offers the chance to grow your expertise while being part of projects that truly matter.

Day to Day
As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you'll help lead and deliver transformative transportation projects-from quick-build safety improvements to complex bikeway networks, complete streets, and urban trail systems.
In this role, you'll:
- Bring multimodal projects to life-working on everything from geometric layouts and grading to green infrastructure, traffic control, and construction staging.
- Contribute to bicycle and pedestrian improvements of all sizes, with opportunities to lead design tasks and create bid-ready Plans, Specs, and Estimates.
- Solve real-world transportation challenges with creativity, technical skill, and collaboration.
- Support and/or lead project coordination-engaging with clients, subconsultants, and internal teams.
- Visit project sites to understand conditions firsthand and observe construction in action.
You'll also have opportunities to:
- Grow your leadership skills by managing tasks, mentoring team members, and participating in client meetings.
- Support pursuits by helping craft proposals, scopes, graphics, and technical content for new projects.
- Contribute to conceptual and feasibility studies for corridor planning, grant applications, and future project pipelines.

Qualifications
Required:
There are 2 levels available for this role and the experience requirements are as follows:
- 2-5 years of engineering experience for Engineering Designer II
- 4-6+ years of experience for Engineering Designer III, with preferred experience being in a consulting environment or public entity.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or a related field of study.
- Experience with DOT and Federally funded design projects is strongly desired
- Experience in, or knowledge of, the field of active transportation and street design.
- Demonstrated understanding and/or experience in preparation of exhibits, concept drawings, and Plans, Specifications and Estimates packages for transportation projects.
- Ability to collaborate with staff members across the company and manage internal team expectations.
- Interest in developing multimodal transportation skills, design proficiency, problem solving skills, and all-around civil transportation proficiency.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and tasks on multiple simultaneous projects involving cross-functional project teams within budgetary and schedule constraints.
- Excellent professional ethics, leadership skills, accountability, and decision-making capabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and analytic skills.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Proficient in Excel, Word, or similar software.
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or a related field of study.
- Proficient in civil engineering software: OpenRoads, GEOPAK, InRoads, Civil3D.
- Experience managing projects for both private and public clients.
- Experience in task management for design projects.
- Experience using Deltek Vision.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
