RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client in Birmingham, AL, that is seeking a Software Engineer III - Mainframe. Work is fully remote, but candidates must be available during Central or Eastern Time business hours.
About the Role:
Our client's Treasury Management Technology group is undertaking a critical modernization initiative, migrating a legacy account analysis and billing application from an on-premise mainframe platform to a vendor-hosted solution. As a Mainframe Software Engineer III, you will lead the effort to research existing systems, extract essential data, and create the COBOL/JCL jobs necessary to support a successful data migration.
This is a hands-on role requiring deep mainframe expertise, analytical ability to navigate undocumented systems, and the technical acumen to develop reliable extract processes from VSAM datasets.
Key Responsibilities:
* Analyze and research legacy mainframe applications and data structures (primarily VSAM)
* Design, develop, and execute COBOL and JCL batch jobs to extract and prepare data for migration
* Collaborate with ETL and SQL Server development teams to normalize and transfer data into vendor-hosted applications
* Identify and fill gaps in documentation through independent investigation and validation
* Optimize batch processes and ensure compliance with regulatory and security standards
* Contribute to Agile Scrum ceremonies and provide updates on sprint progress
* Maintain clear, detailed documentation of all created jobs, logic, and data mappings
REQUIREMENTS:
* 8+ years of experience in mainframe software development
* Strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, IBM z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and VSAM
* Experience creating extract jobs for data migration initiatives
* Demonstrated ability to reverse-engineer legacy systems with minimal documentation
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; Ability to work independently with minimal guidance
* Effective verbal and written communication skills for remote collaboration
* Familiarity with Agile methodologies and participation in sprint-based delivery
Preferred Skills:
* Experience with CICS, ISPW or Endevor for code management
* Exposure to DevOps principles in mainframe environments
* Familiarity with cross-functional data migration efforts (mainframe to SQL Server/ETL stack)
* Experience working in financial services or other regulated industries
* GitHub or other source control tools
Project Context
* One-year engagement (extensions likely)
* Critical to the success of a broader modernization effort involving ETL, SQL Server (2022), SSIS, and C# scripting
* Partnering with multiple developers on a collaborative, fast-moving Agile team
