Role: Principal AI/ML Engineer
Locations: Portland, ME | Boston, MA | Chicago, IL | San Francisco, CA
Schedule: Hybrid (1 3 days onsite per week)
Duration: 12 18+ months
Position Summary
Client is seeking a Principal AI/ML Engineer with 15 20 years of large-scale software engineering experience and deep expertise in AI/ML infrastructure, architecture, and platforms. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for driving their AI/ML engineering strategy, platform development, and next-generation ML capabilities.
Must Have
- 15 20 years of enterprise-scale software design & development
- Strong hands-on skills in Java and Python
- Experience building supervised & unsupervised ML models
- Experience working with LLMs
- Ability to design & implement end-to-end AI/ML infrastructure & platforms
- Strong leadership, communication skills, and an active LinkedIn profile
Key Responsibilities
- Lead architecture & development of clients AI/ML technology platform
- Implement AI/ML services, infrastructure, and data pipelines
- Drive technical strategy, innovations, and platform reliability
- Guide teams on AI/ML best practices, design patterns, and scalable model development
- Partner with data science, security, SRE, product, and engineering teams
- Establish roadmaps, OKRs, project plans, and long-term strategy
- Evaluate external vendors and tools supporting AI/ML initiatives
- Provide mentorship, technical leadership, and maintain high engineering standards
- Ensure system security, compliance, performance, and operational excellence
Required Skills
- Deep experience with:
- Machine Learning, LLMs
- Distributed computing: Ray, Spark
- Cloud architecture: AWS / Azure, S3, EMR, Lambda
- Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, automation
- Big Data, large-scale AI/ML platforms
- Strong background in large-scale software engineering, SDLC, production monitoring
- Experience with SageMaker (plus)
- Experience in payment or financial organizations (plus)
- Bachelor s in CS or related field (Master's preferred)
