JOB SUMMARY

This role will be responsible for leading and coaching teams that deliver customer and business value with speed and quality. You will use your growth mindset to empower, motivate and mature the Agile capabilities of the teams you support in a way that results in measurable improvements. You will oversee and champion Scrum and Kanban events and artifacts, report on and monitor work progress, identify potential risks and dependencies, remove impediments, lead the team to continuously improve and help scale best practices at Marriott.

Effectively and efficiently manages the development sprints from planning to execution to review in an agile development environment. Runs daily scrums, collaborates on requirement documentation, and unblocks barriers to keep the team moving. Coaches and collaborates with cross-functional teams, Product Owners, other Scrum Masters to foster decision-making and continuous improvement. Demonstrates strong leadership abilities and guide the development of agile capabilities in the Global Technology organization and across Marriott's portfolio of products.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience acting as Scrum master for large teams with multiple product deliveries and demonstrated ability to develop and mature Agile best practices across teams at organizations. You will drive measurable improvements to predictability and quality for product delivery. You have a strong interest in process definition and ongoing improvement. You have a successful track record of using metrics across discovery, implementation and release to facilitate accountability and increased visibility into team performance.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education and Experience

Required:
  • Undergraduate degree, equivalent experience, or certification.
  • 7+ years' overall experience in information technology including:
    • 4+ years' experience in applying Agile and Scrum principles (i.e. SAFe, Scrum, Kanban) and applying techniques such as story splitting, estimation, velocity, retrospection, etc.
    • 4+ years planning and problem solving with product management and delivery teams
    • 4+ years creating and delivering presentations and project plans
    • 2+ years prior Scrum Master experience
    • 2+ years working with tools such as Atlassian JIRA/Confluence
Preferred:
  • Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) or PMI's Agile Certified Professional (ACP)
  • SAFe certified - SAFe Agilist or SAFe Scrum Master
  • Experience applying critical and systems thinking to identify creative and holistic solutions to challenges
  • Experience building and leading large and fast paced agile teams with multiple product deliveries.
  • Ability to self-inspect, recognize and actively address improvements, challenges, risks, and mediate issues, collaborate with others to develop solutions and is able to discern when to seek further guidance.
  • Ability to align change management strategies with product development/deployments
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and scale agile best practices, strong interest in continuous process definition and improvements
  • Familiarity with product development and release management experience on an Agile Team in a technology-focused organization
  • Experience in using and applying metrics across discovery and planning, implementation, quality testing and operations to facilitate team accountability and improvement.
  • Ability to understand and represent both the business and technology.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating effective meetings at multiple levels of an organization and an understanding of facilitation techniques.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

Leading Organizational Delivery
  • Responsible for designing and driving the delivery of reports to drive transparency to work and performance of teams, related to but not limited to, Roadmaps, OKRs, KPIs, and Productivity.
  • Own and execute on assigned strategic small-scale initiatives that drive maturity of the team.
  • Design and build dashboards in PPM tools like Jira to provide greater access and visibility to team delivery metrics in real-time.
  • Drives team delivery on high quality customer experiences and core business outcomes on time and on budget.
  • Manages team backlog, work prioritization, story assignment, and tracking in Jira
  • Facilitates and supports all Kanban events and coaches teams on best practices (ex: WIP limits)
  • Facilitates and supports all scrum events: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Refinement, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting of all relevant team performance metrics to ensure organizational visibility and transparency, including but not limited to velocity, burndowns, sprint & release status.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and product managers to manage cross-team dependencies to successfully deliver on broader strategic initiatives.
  • Works with product owner(s) to understand scope changes and/or shifts in priorities to ensure that healthy backlogs are being maintained and refined
  • Works closely with Product to ensure readiness for PI planning and guide your team(s) through successful planning events
  • Proactively identifies impediments and resolves using network of peers or escalation if needed
  • Contributes to the advancement and improvement of Agile practices within the organization
Coaching Teams
  • Guides and coaches the Scrum Team on how to use Lean and Agile practices and principles to deliver high quality products and services to our customers
  • Identifies and supports the resolution of impediments which cannot be solved by the team and encourages team to effectively manage those that can be resolved
  • Builds an open, trusting and respectful team environment centered on collaboration, continuous learning, solution finding and customer focus
  • Works with product owners to handle backlogs and new requests
  • Works with Scrum Team, as well as internal and external stakeholders, to influence and drive decision making and support organizational project or product teams
  • Support the development of behavioral change management, communications and training as needed to drive process and tool adoption, implementation, and compliance

  • Highly proficient with MS Office, Jira and Confluence (or equivalent tools)
  • Highly self-motivated and disciplined person that is passionate about collaborating with and motivating others

  • Sound technical experience with infrastructure that can understand and translate business requests into consumable stories and vice versa
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a high attention to detail and impeccable time management skills
  • Ability to resolve conflicts effectively through bridging communication styles, facilitating collaboration, identifying potential alternatives or leveraging varied approaches
