Position Overview:
The Principal Electrical System Engineer will lead a multidisciplinary team in the development of advanced electronic systems for space-based applications. This role involves full lifecycle engineering-from concept through production and testing-focused on high-reliability, precision electronics for spacecraft payloads and power systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership across systems including optical, mechanical, thermal, RF, software, and power.
- Define and develop electronics solutions for imaging, mechanisms, payload control, mission data processing, and power distribution.
- Serve as subject matter expert in space electronics including focal plane interfaces, power conversion, thermal control, and FPGA-based systems.
- Lead root cause analysis and resolution of electrical anomalies at both system and hardware levels.
- Conduct trade studies to guide architectural decisions using heritage designs and emerging technologies.
- Perform system-level modeling, simulation, requirements derivation, and risk assessments using tools like DOORS and MBSE.
- Ensure electrical compatibility and margin across the full system.
- Engage in hands-on design, development, production, and testing.
- Present findings and designs to internal teams and external stakeholders throughout program phases (Proposal, SRR, PDR, CDR, IV&V).
- Mentor junior engineers in electrical subsystem technologies and mission understanding.
- Develop electronics to meet quality and reliability standards for government and commercial space customers.
Working Conditions:
- Work may be performed in office, lab, cleanroom, or production environments.
- Occasional travel and inter-campus commuting may be required.
- May involve exposure to varying weather conditions and use of protective equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- BS or higher in Engineering or related technical field plus 6+ years of relevant experience.
- MS or PhD may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
- Technical expertise in:
- ROIC photodetector arrays
- Motor drives (3-phase, voice coils, steppers) and feedback systems (resolvers, encoders)
- Analog circuitry for thermal control, telemetry, and biasing
- FPGA closed-loop control
- DC-DC conversion, power distribution, grounding, and EMI mitigation
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and presentation abilities.
- Systems thinking mindset with experience across full system lifecycle.
- Proficiency in interface and design documentation, PCB design, and electronics packaging.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience delivering aerospace or space-based electronics systems.
- Familiarity with TOR-level design standards including Worst Case Analysis (WCA) and Part Stress Analysis.
