Position Summary:

The Associate Cloud Engineer will work with others in Library Technology and Assessment Services (LTAS), the Libraries, Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) and campus partners to develop and maintain systems and increase discoverability of digital collections. The Associate Cloud Engineer will assist with building application tools that automate workflows in the cloud, manage metadata, and integrate systems.

About the Work Unit:

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University comprises nine libraries, as well as service departments in collections services, library technology and assessment services, and teaching & learning. The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are fundamental to the university's goal of advancing scholarship and learning. We collect, preserve, and make accessible a wide variety of resources, we partner with faculty and students to shape research, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is the world's largest open-access digital library dedicated to biodiversity literature and archival materials. The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are a Member of the BHL's Consortia and participate by contributing expertise and strategic guidance, collectively supporting BHL's mission to make biodiversity knowledge freely available.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
  • Work in a team environment to design, develop, and maintain modern applications that are secure and assist in making collections discoverable.
  • Partner with BHL staff to assure long-term access and sustainability of the BHL collections.
  • Lead project planning and coordination efforts for complex BHL initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, timeline management, and documentation.
  • Work with BHL to promote open access and biodiversity informatics
  • Support ongoing development of preservation and access systems for library collections.
  • Respond to staff and user technical questions.
  • Exhibit a commitment to open access, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in all aspects of their work.

Supervisory Relationships:
  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Director of Library Technology and Assessment Services.

Education and Certifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • Relevant certification in AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud is preferred.
Experience and Skills:
  • Knowledge and experience with programming languages like Python, PHP, C#, Rails, or JavaScript is required.
  • Experience with Cloud computing is required
  • Experience with data management is required
  • Project management experience is required
  • Experience with digital library infrastructure, data repository development, digital collections, or comparable large-scale technical systems is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of digital formats are required.
  • Excellent communications skills and a collegial and supportive attitude are required.
