The pay range is $128,000.00 - $231,000.00
Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience and certifications. The Sr. Engineering Manager (SEM) is responsible for a managing a team of engineers. This role is accountable for leading a team that develops, deploys and manages several internal and guest-facing production applications and services. You will be called upon to be the technical representative for your team during cross-team collaborative efforts and planning. Success in this role will require strong and innovative approaches to problem solving, great technical leadership, excellent communication (written and verbal, formal and informal), flexibility, accountability and a self-motivated working style with attention to detail.

As a Senior Engineering Manager within our Inspire & Motivate org, you'll play a critical role in shaping Target's digital platform and enabling rich, engaging experiences for our guests. You'll help lead the engineering strategy and execution for foundational services that power content discovery, personalization, and editorial experiences across our digital surfaces.
You'll bring strong technical acumen and a people-first mindset to guide a team of talented engineers toward high-impact outcomes. Success in this role requires a balance of execution excellence, long-term thinking, and deep partnership with cross-functional leaders in product, UX, data science, and infrastructure.

Drive product development and operations in close collaboration with lead and principal engineers, making sound technical decisions aligned with Target's platform architecture and enterprise standards.
Partner with Principal Engineers to shape and evolve the technical vision for the team, ensuring it scales to meet future guest and business needs.
Build and manage a high-performing team of full-stack engineers, providing coaching, feedback, and career development support while fostering a culture of growth and inclusion.
Maintain a hands-on approach by contributing to technical planning and guiding active development efforts across key capabilities and solutions.
Define infrastructure needs, evaluate internal vs. external cloud options, and ensure alignment with Target's enterprise tools and platforms.
Lead resolution of technical roadblocks, spanning code, infrastructure, build, and deployment, while ensuring adherence to development and security standards.
Collaborate closely with Product and UX partners to influence the roadmap, shape requirements, and drive alignment across teams.
Champion modern software practices including Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and automated testing to drive team efficiency and product quality.
Establish strong operating rhythms and clear communication with stakeholders, ensuring technical plans are transparent, feasible, and well understood.

About you:
4 year degree in or equivalent experience
7+ years of engineering (software development) experience
1-3 years of managing teams with a strong track record of delivery for cross-functional product experience with Cloud hosting and managing products
Proficient in building high performing APIs and writing specs
Expertise in 2 or more of the programming languages
Experience with integration, data handling technologies and other open source frameworks
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to variety of audiences
Team-orientated, passionate about developing others' skills and capabilities
Successful track record of working in large enterprise technology ecosystems leading complex technology teams
Deep understanding of agile development processes and methodology including continuous integration and delivery, with a mindset of building incrementally and delivering business value quickly
This position may be considered for a Remote or Hybrid (known internally at Target as "Flex for Your Day") work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at a Target location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role may be performed either remote or onsite at a Target location depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
