ITSG-33 experience
A federal government department is undergoing a transformation of how IM/IT services are delivered within the organization. The department plays a key role in delivering critical applications that support national safety, economic prosperity, and scientific advancement.
To support this transformation, the department requires two (2) Security Assessors to address bottlenecks within the cyber risk management function. The Security Assessment and Authorization (SA&A) process ensures that new applications, network services, cloud-based solutions, and managed services have been reviewed for security risks and are equipped with appropriate safeguards before moving to production or processing sensitive information.
All production systems must maintain a valid Authority to Operate (ATO) by ensuring that their SA&A packages are current and compliant within the approved timeframes.

Tasks
- Participate in meetings with technical authorities, delegates, and internal clients to discuss security requirements and objectives.
- Provide advice and guidance, verbally and in writing, on IT security topics to support the delivery of SA&A services.
- Deliver SA&A services including analysis of threats, vulnerabilities, existing safeguards, and preparation of required IT security documentation.
- Apply IT security risk management processes to enterprise IT solutions.
- Assess systems, applications, and platforms for compliance with internal and government security policies.
- Perform information system security implementation and assessment activities in alignment with recognized frameworks such as ITSG-33 - IT Security Risk Management: A Lifecycle Approach.
- Evaluate and recommend IT products and baseline configurations based on Government of Canada (GC) security policies, standards, and industry best practices.
- Conduct certification activities to verify that security safeguards meet applicable standards; validate security requirements through design documents and assurance testing.
- Review results of Security Testing and Evaluation (ST&E) to confirm technical safeguards function as intended and that residual risk levels are acceptable.
- Review security documentation prepared by project teams and assemble complete SA&A packages.
- Seek written approvals (including interim) for systems to operate when risk and compliance thresholds are met.
- Conduct meetings and provide advisory sessions intended to coach and empower internal staff to perform effective system security reviews.
