Role Overview
We are hiring a Director – Cloud Engineering & Strategy to lead a cross-functional, DevOps-oriented team with deep expertise in AWS Cloud Application Development, AWS Infrastructure, AWS Networking, Data Center Networking, Kubernetes, and Observability. This leader will embed AI and automation into delivery, operate as a trusted advisor to Zayo’s technology and business leadership, and own outcomes across customer experience, revenue, stability, and cost.
You will shape the cloud strategy and operating model, define a clear roadmap and backlog, and deliver measurable business impact by partnering with FTEs and vendors across onshore and offshore locations—running as one system with a single backlog and shared metrics.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Business Alignment
- Translate Zayo’s business priorities into a clear strategy, roadmap, and domain backlog.
- Own outcomes across experience, revenue, reliability, and cost—not just activities.
- Act as an extension of the client org (not a remote vendor PMO); build trust with technology and business leaders.
Solution Architecture & Delivery
- Drive end-to-end delivery (discovery → design → build → test → release → run) for cloud platforms and services.
- Make architecture decisions spanning AWS services, Kubernetes orchestration, networking, and hybrid/cloud.
- Be a hands-on technical leader—able to read/critique architecture diagrams, pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration.
DevOps Operating Model & Automation
- Champion a true DevOps model—reduce handoffs, automate deployments, testing, and operations.
- Embed AI and automation in delivery workflows; measure impact on speed, quality, and cost.
- Keep the structure lean—minimise layers, simplify roles, and centralise expertise where it accelerates learning.
Onshore/Offshore Leadership & Vendor Management
- Lead onshore/offshore as one system—single backlog, shared metrics, and no throw-over-the-wall.
- Govern budgets, capacity, and vendor contributions; ensure SLAs and outcomes are met.
- Partner with client stakeholders to co-design solutions and agree measurable outcomes.
SRE, Observability & Production Excellence
- Establish and operate with SRE practices: SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, incident response, and post-mortems.
- Build observability across metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting; define robust run practices.
- Proactively manage risk, dependencies, and production stability with strong change/release management.
Team Leadership & Culture
- Build and grow a high-trust, high-performance culture.
- Hire, mentor, define career paths, and drive knowledge sharing across squads.
- Model modern ways of working: agile product thinking, small batches, fast feedback, IaC, continuous testing.
- Communicate with clarity—crisp storytelling for execs and transparent statrisk management.

Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience
- 10+ years in software/platform engineering or large tech programs, including 3–5 years in leadership.
- Demonstrated success running multi-squad, multi-vendor delivery with DevOps & agile ways of working.
- Strong technical literacy in at least one Zayo domain (cloud, networking, infrastructure).
- Experience leading distributed onshore/offshore teams with a single backlog and shared metrics.
- Excellent stakeholder management and executive communication (VP/C-level).
Technical Skills
- Large-scale cloud & infrastructure: AWS (primary); Azure/Google Cloud Platform experience a plus.
- Containers & Kubernetes: cluster design, security, multi-tenant workloads, service mesh.
- Networking: TCP/IP, routing, VPN, load balancing, DNS, firewalls, cloud VPC/VNet.
- Infrastructure as Code & config management: Terraform, CloudFormation/ARM, Ansible.
- Observability: metrics, logs, tracing, alerting; tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog, Splunk.
- SRE practices: SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, incident response, post-mortems.
- Reliability, security & compliance for infrastructure (e.g., HA, DR, encryption, IAM).
- Telco / network-provider experience is a strong plus.
Leadership Skills
- Ability to manage cross-functional teams and deliver complex programs.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
