Senior Middleware Administrator
Richmond, Virginia, United States (On-site)
We are seeking an experienced Middleware Systems Engineer to join an IT team. In this critical role, you
will be responsible for implementing, supporting, and optimizing our Middleware system infrastructure.
You will work closely with the IT team to ensure the stability, performance, and scalability of our
WebSphere environments and related middleware components.
Key Responsibilities:
Support and maintain Middleware infrastructure, including IBM WebSphere Application
Server (WAS), WebSphere Liberty, IBM HTTP Server (IHS), Apache Tomcat, and F5 BIGIP
LTM.
Perform day-to-day troubleshooting, performance tuning, and monitoring of middleware
components and Java applications.
Automate application deployment, installation, and administration tasks using scripting
languages such as Jython and Shell scripting.
Install, administer, and manage SSL certificates and key stores for WAS and IBM HTTP
Server environments.
Analyze Java garbage collection, heap dumps, and identify memory leaks to optimize
application performance.
Monitor and tune middleware system capacity, planning for growth and scalability.
Collaborate with IBM Support to report and resolve product issues via the IBM Support
Portal and manage Problem Management Records (PMRs).
Provide documentation, training, and technical guidance to IT teams and stakeholders.
Support integration with authentication systems such as LDAP and IBM Single Sign-On
(SSO).
Utilize application monitoring tools, including Dynatrace, for ongoing performance and
health checks.
Ensure system patching, software upgrades, and testing are completed following IT best
practices.
Required Qualifications:
8+ years of hands-on experience with IBM WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere
Liberty, IBM HTTP Server, and Apache Tomcat.
Strong experience with F5 BIGIP LTM load balancers.
Proficient in Java and familiar with Java architecture and web services.
Expertise in scripting for automation using Jython, Shell scripting, Python, or Perl.
Experience managing SSL certificates and key stores in middleware environments.
Demonstrated ability in performance tuning and troubleshooting middleware and Java
application issues.
Experience with capacity management and planning for infrastructure growth.
Knowledge of LDAP, IBM SSO, DNS, and related network protocols.
Experience with application monitoring tools such as Dynatrace or equivalent.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to create clear technical documentation and
deliver training.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with IBM Support Portal and managing PMRs.
Familiarity with automation frameworks and DevOps practices.
Background in security best practices related to middleware and application servers.
