A Program Manager in manufacturing is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of interconnected projects to achieve overarching business objectives.
Strategic and financial management
Define program strategy: Align manufacturing program objectives, project prioritization, and execution with the company's long-term strategic goals.
Oversee budgets and resources: Manage the overall program budget, allocate financial and material resources across multiple projects, and monitor profitability.
Guide strategic investment: Work with senior leadership to identify and justify investments for capacity increases, new product lines, or infrastructure modernization.
Program execution and oversight
Supervise project managers: Provide guidance and oversight to a team of project managers, ensuring project goals align with the larger program strategy.
Manage interdependencies: Identify and manage dependencies between projects to ensure seamless integration and avoid conflicts that could impact production.
Monitor progress: Track program milestones, performance metrics, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure projects are on track and delivering expected benefits.
Agile and lean implementation
Apply SAFe methodology: Leverage knowledge of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to apply agile principles at a program level for manufacturing, coordinating the work of multiple agile teams (Agile Release Trains).
Facilitate continuous improvement: Drive the adoption of Lean, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies to enhance manufacturing efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize production workflows.
Manage change effectively: Use a structured approach to manage change, adjusting strategies and plans based on internal factors and manufacturing challenges.
Risk and stakeholder management
Proactive risk management: Identify, assess, and mitigate program-level risks, such as supply chain disruptions, equipment failure, or regulatory changes, before they impact delivery.
Communicate with stakeholders: Act as the primary point of contact for stakeholders, including executives, technical teams, and vendors, providing transparent updates and managing expectations.
Vendor and supplier management: Coordinate and manage relationships with external vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of necessary materials and services.
Qualifications and requirements
Experience
Significant experience in program or senior project management, with a proven track record of successfully leading multiple complex projects.
Extensive experience within a manufacturing environment, demonstrating a deep understanding of production lifecycles, quality control, and operational processes.
Certifications and skills
PMP Certification: Possession of the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a standard requirement, demonstrating mastery of traditional project management practices.
SAFe Certification: Experience and certification in the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) are critical for applying agile practices at scale across the program.
Technical expertise: Familiarity with manufacturing-specific technology, such as ERP systems (e.g., SAP), MES systems, CAD/CAM software, and automation technologies.
Soft skills
Leadership: Strong ability to lead, mentor, and motivate cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Problem-solving: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills to navigate complex manufacturing and logistical challenges.
