Overview
We are conducting a confidential search for a hands-on Controller to lead the Accounting and Operational Accounting functions for a highly profitable, PE-backed, tech-enabled services organization. The company is headquartered in Plano, TX, with all accounting staff working onsite.
This role is operations-heavy and requires a leader who thrives in managing high-volume, time-sensitive processes, developing people, and staying ahead of complex workflows. While the accounting itself is straightforward, the execution, controls, and client-driven requirements demand exceptional organization, urgency, and leadership.
The Controller will report to the CFO and partner closely with the CEO and executive team. The position is expected to evolve into a more traditional Controller role over time, particularly as the company continues through acquisitions and prepares for a future liquidity event.
- 7 total team members, primarily junior-level accountants and clerical staff
- 2 accounting professionals focused on debits/credits and core accounting
- 5 operational/clerical team members responsible for high-volume payment processing and client remittances
- The Controller will be responsible for guiding, prioritizing, and developing the team, while personally owning outcomes and deadlines
Operational Accounting Leadership (Primary Focus)
- Own and oversee high-volume consumer payment processing, daily remittances, and end-to-end cash flow execution
- Ensure strict adherence to daily, weekly, and month-end deadlines, including client-specific requirements
- Actively manage and improve the production-oriented workflow of the five operational accounting team members
- Identify bottlenecks, risks, and inefficiencies; implement automation, controls, and process improvements
- Maintain strong internal controls in an environment subject to frequent client audits (50+ per year)
- Oversee month-end close activities, general ledger, reconciliations, AR/AP, credit cards, payroll accounting, and intercompany activity
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP and firm-wide accounting policies
- Oversee IOLTA trust accounts, including accuracy, compliance, and monthly client reporting
- Support tax compliance efforts at the federal and state level in coordination with external providers
- Build a proactive, forward-looking accounting function that is ahead of deadlines, not reactive
- Standardize, document, and maintain all accounting and operational accounting processes
- Partner with leadership to continuously improve scalability, accuracy, and audit readiness
- Support accounting and treasury integration for acquisitions
- Help onboard new entities into existing processes, controls, and systems
- Lead with empathy, integrity, and accountability
- Coach and develop a junior team, setting expectations and holding people accountable
- Establish a culture of urgency, ownership, and continuous improvement
- Be physically present and engaged this role requires hands-on, onsite leadership

- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including month-end close and financial reporting
- Experience in multi-entity environments
- Prior M&A integration experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of GAAP
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience with NetSuite is preferred but not required
- Big Four or public accounting background is a plus, not required
- Bachelor s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA is a plus
- Base Salary: $125,000 - $160,000
- Annual Bonus + MIP Eligibility
- Total Compensation Potential: ~$155,000 - $200,000
- PE-backed organization with a targeted exit timeframe of 2027-2028
- Opportunity to grow into a more traditional Controller role as the company scales
- First round interview is via Zoom with CFO
- Onsite interviews: January 12-13 with CFO and CEO (approximately 2 hours)
