Imaging System Engineer (Research Scientist III)

Location: Sunnyvale, CA - Onsite

Position Summary:
Imaging System Engineer Meta Reality Labs brings together world-class experts to design and deliver cutting-edge products at the intersection of hardware, software, and content. We are building the future of augmented and mixed reality, and we're looking for an experienced Imaging System Engineer to join our team. We are seeking a creative and technically skilled Imaging System Engineer with deep expertise in imaging pipelines, color science, and real-time rendering. This role emphasizes rapid prototyping of new imaging architectures and developing perceptually accurate rendering techniques for immersive MR/AR experiences. You will work on camera capture systems, display pipelines, and perceptual modeling to help shape next-generation MR/AR technologies.
Responsibilities

  • Develop perceptual features that enhance MR/AR realism by modeling human vision and color perception.
  • Build platforms for objective and subjective evaluation of virtual object rendering using psychophysical methods.
  • Design and implement real-time display color processing pipelines leveraging GPU, CPU/MCU, or hardware-accelerated resources.
  • Prototype MR/AR demos using Python, MATLAB, Blender, Unity, and C#.
  • Research and develop computer vision and machine learning algorithms for ambient light estimation and photorealistic object rendering.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Imaging Science, Color Science, Vision Science, Cognitive Science, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in camera or display pipelines for embedded systems, mobile devices, or Android platforms.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including MATLAB, Python, C++, and C#.
  • Solid background in signal processing and data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of image processing, color perception, human vision, HDR imaging, image segmentation, and AR/MR rendering.
  • Familiarity with camera sensors, light sensors, and display hardware systems.
  • Experience in 3D computer graphics, physically based rendering, and lighting/shading techniques.
  • Proficient with tools such as Blender and Unity for rapid prototyping.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Minimum Years of Experience: 5+

Must-Have Skills

  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in programming languages including MATLAB, Python, C++, and C#.
  • Signal Processing and Data Analysis: Solid background in signal processing and data analysis.
  • Camera or Display Pipelines: Hands-on experience in camera or display pipelines for embedded systems, mobile devices, or Android platforms.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Image Processing and Color Perception: Strong understanding of image processing, color perception, human vision, HDR imaging, image segmentation, and AR/MR rendering.
  • 3D Computer Graphics and Physically Based Rendering: Experience in 3D computer graphics, physically based rendering, and lighting/shading techniques.
  • Familiarity with Camera Sensors and Display Hardware Systems: Familiarity with camera sensors, light sensors, and display hardware systems.

Degrees/Certifications
