Job Details

Starting Salary Range: $115,000 - $134,000 - position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met.

Join MISO as a Senior Power Systems Data Scientist on the Grid Research and Development team, where you'll develop innovative solutions, pilots, and prototypes to enable the reliable operation of the future grid. Collaborate with engineers, operators, and fellow data scientists to lead complex initiatives that leverage AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics. Your work will support predicting grid disturbances, optimizing power flow, and improving resiliency amid the evolving energy landscape, including renewables, DERs, and large electric loads. This is a high-impact opportunity to apply cutting-edge data science to advance situational awareness and grid stability

What You'll Do as our Senior Power Systems Data Scientist:
  • Play a pivotal role in advanced research and experimentation to improve predictive fault analysis, state estimation, contingency analysis, and power flow optimization for grid operations.
  • Collaborate with internal leaders and external stakeholders to identify data-driven opportunities that enhance grid reliability, particularly related to renewable energy, large loads, and power flow stability.
  • Apply statistical, analytical, and programming skills to process and interpret streaming grid data, identify patterns and root causes, and provide actionable insights for real-time decision making.
  • Communicate complex findings through clear, impactful visualizations and presentations tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences, supporting strategic planning and operational decisions.
  • Mentor team members in AI, machine learning, and cloud tools, while staying current with emerging data science trends and contributing to a culture of innovation and accountability.

What You'll Bring as our Senior Power Systems Data Scientist:
  • Master's in a relevant field with 5+ years of experience leading impactful, data-driven projects using advanced statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and machine learning techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge in supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning, large language models (LLMs), natural language processing, physics-based AI and applied mathematical techniques for electric grid network analysis (e.g. IIOT, SCADA, etc.) and resiliency modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with big data, distributed and high-performance computing, cloud technologies, and machine learning platforms such as Databricks, Azure, and Apache Spark.
  • Proficient in Python, R, SQL, and tools like GitHub, with a strong foundation in multivariate time series data hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and forecasting for the electric power grid.
  • Preferred experience in the energy industry with grid simulation and a strong ability to translate complex datasets into actionable insights through advanced visualization.
  • Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.

Transformative innovation is happening in the electric industry, from digitalizing homes and distributed resources to renewable energy and an ever-changing grid. MISO manages the electricity superhighway in the Central U.S. and through use of groundbreaking research and advanced technology, our highly skilled employees ensure power flows reliably to 45 million Americans. Operating the electricity grid, running a robust energy market, planning for a bright future - it's what our immensely hardworking and dedicated team does every day.

At MISO we offer a hybrid work environment and a comprehensive benefits package, including 401K available on your first day of employment.
